Week 8 - Challenge 5 - Door Trim Lower
DOOR TRIM LOWER DESIGN
OBJECTIVE:
Create the door trim plastic component through the given class A surface. To begin with, the tooling axis for the given class A surface should be created meeting the requirements of the draft angle and at the end perform the Draft analysis on the model.
INTRODUCTION:
Firstly, we have to create the required Tooling axis for the given class A surface. Then perform Draft analysis on the class A surface.
After that we have to create the class B & C surfaces. Then join the final plastic component and perfom Draft Analysis.
SPECIFICATION:
Thickness of the component = 2.5mm
CLASS A SURFACE:
Class A surface is an aesthetic surface with highest quality finish. Most class A surfaces for an automotive component are made using Autodesk-Alias based on the final concept-sketch.
All class A surfaces should have Curvature-continuity which means the continuity between the surfaces should share the same boundary. It is taken as a reference by the Automotive Pastic Designer to create Class B and Class C surfaces.
Import the given Class A surface, Check for continuity using boundary and create the tooling axis for the Class A surfaces and perform Draft Analysis.

TOOLING AXIS:
First we have to create the point based on the measure inertia concept, Click on the measure inertia icon and select the class A surface.

Then select the create geometry option and select Non-associate geometry. Click on the center of gravity option and create the point for the Class A surface.

The tooling axis is used to check the draft on the class A to confirm the surfaces is applicable for the draft analysis. The tooling axis is created using point-direction method.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:
No parts can be ejected from the tool if it is having a straight 90degree profile from its base surface. A small draft angle is provide to component in order to get an easy removal from the tool. Draft analysis technique is used to analyze whether our part model created is manufacturable based on the draft condition applied.
To start the draft analysis, we will go to insert and click on the option called analysis. Select the Feature Draft Analysis, click on Quick Analysis option on mode. Under direction we will choose the icon with the symbol of compass on it. Place it o the tooling axis.

CLASS B SURFACE:
The class B surface is created by offseting Class A surface downwards. Offset the class A surface for 2.5mm. There should be some surface Dis-continuity on the offset, close the gaps.

PATCHES:
The surfaces are closed by using multi-section surface option. Extract the edges of the gap and do the multi-section surface option and join the surface with offset surface.

OPERATION USED ON PATCHES:
Extract
Spline
Multiple Extract
Multi-section Surfaces

CLASS B:

CLASS C SURFACE:
OUTER SURFACE:
Extract the outer surface of the class A and Extract the Outer Edges of the class A surface, Do a sweep using Reference surface option on the edge and surface.
INNER SURFACE:
Extract the inner edges and surfaces of the class A. Do a sweep on them Using Reference surface option.

C SURFACE:
CLASS A AND C:
Join the class A and C surfaces together, trim it with the B surface to get final component.

FINAL TRIM:
Trim the above surface with the class B surface to get the final component.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:
Final Draft analysis on the component.

CLOSE SURFACE:
Open the part body and do a close surface operation on the final trim.
