Week 8 - Challenge 5 - Core & Cavity Design

CORE & CAVITY DESIGN FOR SWITCH BEZEL PLASTIC COMPONENT

Aim : The main objective here is to design Core & Cavity blocks for Switch Bezel plastic component.

We already have a component, so will take it as an input. Here are the closed surface and solid part of it.

Lets ensure the design by draft analysis. Drag and drop the compass along the tooling axis and click on the component. Here we are getting all green over Class A and C, that means the design is fine and will get ejected easily.

To create core and cavity blocks, the concept of parting surface and parting line should be understood. Parting surface is the surface which acts as the connection between core and cavity blocks. It is the surface where both the blocks meet and stays together under pressure.

To create the same, split the class B surface here by class C, as in this case Class A and C get clearance together and Class B gets separately.

Create a rectangular sketch that covers the component area clearly and extrude the profile along the tooling axis.

Split it and keep the inner part. The pink surface is the parting surface where both the blocks connect.

Parting line is the intersection of the parting surface and the component. It is shown as the yellow profile below.

After creating parting surface and parting line, now proceed for the creation of core and cavity blocks. Core block mainly has the impressioned part, so here keep the pocket towards core that means Class A and C be towards core side.

Trim off the class A, class C and parting surface together.

Trim the generated surface with the earlierly extruded surface with rectangular profile. Later, fill the open boundary as it be planar and join all together. This gives the closed surface for core block.

Similarly, trim the rectangular extruded surface and class B surface together. Fill the open boundary and join them, which finally will give a closed surface for cavity block.

Switch to part workbench and solidify the closed surfaces. It is noticable how perfectly the component fits between the two blocks.

Lets take an intersection and understand in detail. The core and cavity blocks are parted apart along the parting surface (black). Core block gives the clearance for class A and class C. And cavity block gives clearance for class B surface.
