Week 8 - Challenge 4 - Coin Holder Design

COIN HOLDER DESIGN

OBJECTIVE:

To design a center console coin holder considering all plastic product design rules.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Creation of tooling axis
  • To create class B and C surface
  • Draft analysis on class A and the final component.

GIVEN INPUT:

Thickness of the component = 2.5 mm.

CREATION OF TOOLING DIRECTION:

After receiving the class A surface as an input it is checked for any irregularities. If there are any we can go ahead and make amends if they are minor changes and if they are major change then we need to get prior authorization before making any changes to class A surface. Then it is joined together as a single surface.

Subsequently tooling axis must be decided for the particular surface by analysing it in different views.

The given surface can't be tooled in a single tooling direction. It requires one or two tooling direction.

And also some walls of this component is in 0 degree without any draft and it is not feasible to tool it.So the only way is to approach the class A designer and ask them to give a minimum draft on those walls to remove the part from the core at ease.

So here a line is drawn normal to the base surface and it is determined to be the main tooling direction.

There is also a hole in this component which will be cleared in a different tooling direction.

DRAFT ANALYSIS ON CLASS A:

A min of 3 degree draft is required on all the faces of the surface to clear the draft analysis.

The colour green infers that all the faces of the surface has a positive draft(>+3).The red colour indiactes that it has a negative draft(>-3) which can be tooled from a different direction or we can have a minimum draft by approaching the class A designer as aforementioned.

VARIOUS ORIENTATION OF THE DRAFT ANALYSIS:

CREATION OF B SURFACE:

The next thing is to design the class B surface with reference to class A. The simplest way is that to breakdown the class A surface into simpler surfaces by ignoring the fillets.Thickness of the final component is 2.5 mm so it is offsetted by 2.5 mm below the class A

Commands used:

  • Extract
  • Untrim
  • Extrapolate
  • Offset
  • Trim

CREATION OF CLASS C SURFACE:

Here for this specific component sweep is done with reference to the surface as the C surface is perpendicular to the tooling axis.

FINAL SURFACE:

Final trim is done by joining the class C and A together and trimming it along class B surface to get the desired part.

Different views of the Coin Holder:

Now using the close surface a solid body is created out of the final surface.

DRAFT ANALYSIS ON THE FINAL COMPONENT:

TREE STRUCTURE:

CONCLUSION:

To conclude the class B and C surface of a coin holder is designed considering all the plastic design rules and a tooling direction is also created for the class A and also draft analysis is done on class A as well as the final component.
