Week 8 - Challenge 3 - Coin Holder Design

Coin Holder Design

The aim is to create the Coin Holder Plastic component through the given class A surface. The thickness of the component is 2.5mm.The steps are

Creating the dummy tooling axis

Inorder to create the tooling axis, firstly extract the base.Provide a point on the surface of the base that extracted.Bring the axis system to that point.Create a meanline clearing both the walls.Take intersection between the surface and bisecting plane and then create a normal line. Thus the tooling axis is formed.

Draft Analysis

When developing parts for plastic injection molding, applying a draft (or a taper) to the faces of the part is critical to improving the moldability of your part. Without it, parts run the risk of poor cosmetic finishes and may bend, break, or warp due to molding stresses caused by plastic cooling. Equally important, an absence of draft may prevent parts from ejecting from the mold, damaging not only the parts but possibly the mold itself—a costly and time-consuming detour.

Steps for applying Draft analysis

Change the view to material mode for draft anlysis.Draft analysis is done using featured draft analysis tool.Use the compass fucnction to aling the compass to the tooling direction and lock the direction using lock function in the draft analysis tool bar.The surface is showing green colour so that the surface clears the minimum draft angle of 3 degree.By using the analyses under the running pointwe can check draft angle on the individual faces. It shows how much draft on specific points when we move the cursor point.

Creating the B Surfaces

For creating B surfaces, extract the surfaces which doesnot have fillets and untrim it.Extrapolate and then trim it,then offset with given specified thickness.

Creating the C Surfaces

We have to use sweep command.Make boundary and extract the surface for sweep. The next operation is join Class A with the C surface.

Apply fillet to the B surface. Then trim C Surface with the B Surface.

Finally make it a closed body
