Week 8 - Challenge 2 - Base Bracket Design
Objective: Creation of the Base Bracket Plastic component through the given Class-A surface. Also to perform the Draft analysis on the model
Draft:
Draft is required on all parts in the direction of mold movement in order to allow parts to release or eject from the mold properly. Draft is the angle in which the part is tapered to allow it to release. As the part cools, it tends to want to stick to the core side of the mold. Adding draft helps the part to release. Most parts or applications require a minimum of half to one degree, however 3 degree is widely accepted as the norm.
Steps in draft analysis:
1. Check the connectivity of given class A surface to ensure there is no gap between the surfaces. This is done by either Boundary command or join command.
2. Next step is to decide the component ejection direction and then setting the dummy tooling axis. Dummy tooling axis is the line along which core and cavity will open.

3. Creation of actual tooling axis by Bisection method: Now find the lines lying approximately parallel to dummy tooling axis. These should be the lines along which draft angle is provided. Select two points on the intersection line and then obtain the line as shown below
Create a new line by selecting bisecting option in line creation dialogue box. This will be the actual tooling axis for the given model.

4. Go to Insert - Analysis - Featured draft analysis. Before that customize view parameter mode to material. Then click on the compass icon and align it with the tooling axis and click on the surface, we will get our results.

From the above image it is seen that surface in green colour has draft angle greater than 2 degree which is most required for tooling feasibility. Below image shows full draft analysis

Creation of the Base Bracket Plastic component through the given Class-A surface
Step 1: Creation of two Rib surfaces and offsetting the same to a value equal to thickness of the component.

Step 2: Creation of Base surface

Step 3: Trimming operation carried out to get the required class B surface

Step 4: Creation of class C surface by using sweep command

After final trim we get the required model
