Week 8 - Challenge 2 - Base Bracket Design

BASE BRACKET

OBJECTIVE

To create base bracket plastic component from the given class- A surface.

To create the tooling axis for the plastic component

To perform draft analysis over the plastic component.

CLASS- A SURAFCE

This is the given class- A surface. In which there are two holes to be crated and two ribs. These two ribs are connected by a flat surface.

GENERATING TOOLING AXIS

1. Doing the connectivity check to ensure whether the given class-A surface is continuous or not. It seems there is not any discontinuous boundary.

2. This is the surface and YZ plane intersection boundary line. The nearest parallel surface to assumed drawing direction is chosen for bisecting.

3. The tooling axis is created.

BASE BRACKET DESIGN PROCEDURE

CLASS-B SURFACE

RIB CREATION

  1. Bringing in the class-A surface.
  2. Extracting the rib surface.
  3. Un-trim the extracted surface.
  4. Extrapolate the un-trimmed surface.
  5. Trim the surface as per required shape.
  6. Repeat step 2, 3 and 4 for the next rib surface.
  7. Offset the created rib surfaces for 2.5mm. ( CLASS-B SURFACE)

MIDDLE FLAT RIBS CONNECTING SURFACE

  1. Extract the middle flat connecting surface from class-A.
  2. Un-trim the extracted surface.
  3. Extrapolate the un-trimmed surface.
  4. Offset the extrapolated untrimmed surface for 2.5mm.
  5. Trim the surfaces. (CLASS-B SURFACE)

CREATION OF BASE SURFACE

  1. Extract the base surface from class-A surface.
  2. Un-trim the base surface.
  3. Extrapolate the base surface.
  4. Offset he base surface for 2.5mm
  5. Trim the base surface from the middle surface which is already created.

JOIN

  1. Join all the class-B surfaces to make as one unit.

FILLET

  1. Since the class-B surface is 2.5mm downwards to the class-A surface need to add this offset distance with the filleting radius observed from the class-A surface.

CLASS-C SURFACE

This the connecting surface of class-A and class-B surfaces.

  1. Create the boundary of class-A surface using boundary command.
  2. Use sweep command to generate class-C surface along the draft direction with 3 degrees drafting angle with respect to the tooling axis.
  3. Extrapolate the hole features from class-A surface and trim them.

CLOSED SURFACE

  1. Publish class-A, class-B, class-C surfaces and tooling axis.
  2. Join all the surface together.
  3. Create closed surface.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Limiting draft angle = 7 degrees

1.Draft analysis from the selected hole feature as tooling axis location.

2.Drfat analysis from the CG point of the plastic component.

CONCLUSION

Hence the plastic component is created from class-A surface and draft analysis is done.
