Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover

DRAFT ANALYSIS ON FAN COVER

Draft Analysis

It is a procedure to check whether the Part model created in cad is manufacturable based on the draft angle given to the inner and outer walls. It also ensures that the part can be ejected from the Tool easily.

Draft analysis is carried out on components, which after manufacturing gets ejected from the tool. It is majorly carried out on sheet metal and plastic components.

Draft angle Plastic component  - 3 Deg (0.5 Deg for features inside plastic part)

Draft angle automotive sheet metal part – 7 Deg or More.

Draft analysis steps

  • Ensuring there is no gap on the given Class A surface. It can be checked using ‘Join’ and ‘ boundary’ tool in operations tool bar.
  • To find the Tooling axis of the component. Draft angle is also given along the tooling axis.

Tooling Axis

  • It is along the direction in which the mold opens and the component gets ejected.
  • Visually check all x, y, z direction for possibility of tooling axis creation.

1. Creating Tooling line along X Direction

  • Create intersection lines along ZX Direction.
  • Create a bisecting line for Tooling axis in X direction.

2. Creating Tooling line along Y Direction

  • Create intersection lines along YZ Direction.
  • Create a bisecting line for Tooling axis in Y direction.

3. Main Tooling Axis ( Bisect X , Y Direction)

  • Create main tooling axis by bisecting the tooling axis along X and Y Direction.
  • Publish the Tooling Axis.

4. Draft Analysis

  • Go to draft analysis.
  • Use the compass to define the new draft direction.
  • Lock the draft direction.
  • Small cursor appears, select the surface to create draft analysis.
  • Click on color scale tab, to adjust the draft angle analysis.
