Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover

DRAFT ANALYSIS OF FAN COVER

Objectives:

To perform draft analysis on given Fan cover model

To create tooling axis for the model

To give required draft for this model

Steps of creation of tooling axis of Fan cover model:

First thing needed for draft analysis is that given Class-A surface model should be without any gaps. If any discontinuity is found in it, then one should use JOIN or BOUNDARY command to join surface and remove any remained gaps.

After joining this model, a tooling axis needs to be created.

First, locate center of hole and place an axis system on it.

In X direction cost of tooling will be more for length of surface model and in Y direction, hole and other surface requires side cores.

So here axis is needed to be created in Z direction, where hole as well as other surfaces can be manufactured using one side core only.

So create an intersection using ZX plane in direction of X axis.

Now, hide the given Class-A surface and create a dummy center axis.

Here some inclined lines are available in this intersection sketch.

Two new lines are created on these lines and bisecting these two lines, a tooling clearing X direction is generated.

After that, another intersection is created using YZ plane in direction of Y axis.

Two new lines are created for inclined sides of this intersection sketch. Then a bisection line is created with the help of these two lines. This line is named as tooling clearing Y direction.

Finally, tooling axis is generated by bisecting tooling clearing X direction as well as tooling clearing Y direction.

Here FAN COVER surface model as well as TOOLING AXIS is published by using “PUBLICATION” from Tools menu.

Steps to do draft analysis on Fan cover model:

Go to insert > analysis > feature draft analysis or directly click on Feature draft analysis icon from menu.

First select compass option from pop-up menu to set axis system coincide with tooling axis.

After setting up axis on tooling axis, use lock option to fix it.

Surface model will turn into green colour surface, which shows that draft for model is in limit upto 3 degrees.

Run quick analysis on model and if any draft angle is more than limit, then one can apply new value of it in pop up box.

Full analysis shows different draft angles with different colours as shown in figure.

To check draft on different surfaces, one can use option “ANALYSES UNDER RUNNING POINT”. If it is upto 3 degrees, then surface colour will be green. It shows blue colour for 0 degree draft and red colour for less than 0 degree draft.

Here is an example of INVERT DRAFT DIRECTION analysis.

Below image shows the different views of draft analysis of FAN COVER model.

Tree structure for FAN COVER

Conclusion:

In this way, I have learned about tooling axis creation as well as draft analysis done for given FAN COVER model.
