Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover
OBJECTIVE: This challenge intends to create a tooling axis and perform a draft analysis on a Fan cover model.
DRAFT ANALYSIS:
The draft is the angel
The analysis is the detailed examination of the part.
So, draft analysis is the angel examination on all the component individual surfaces from the tool direction. The minimum draft angle is 0.5°. However, up to 3° is widely accepted. Giving some draft to the part surfaces makes it easier while ejecting. Generally, drafts are given in the direction of mold movement. Draft analysis ensures whether the designed part can be easily ejected from the mold properly (without causing friction between the solid part and core, cavity).
Tooling Axis: The direction in which the mold or core and cavity that we want it to be get opened is the tooling axis.
Report
Initially, a design check is done using the operations tool boundary, to ensure that there are no gaps between the given class-A surface.
Creation of tooling Axis
To create the tooling axis in the best possible way the given component is checked in all directions (X, Y, and Z). After analyzing the component it was understood that Z-direction is the best to create a tooling axis. Because it eliminates the necessity of extra things like side core.
To make sure the faces on X and Y are clearing the tooling axis (Z direction), a dummy tooling axis is created respectively to the Z direction. Bisecting lines are created on the faces that we think might not clear the tooling axis. When the bisecting line is parallel to the dummy tooling axis then it is clear that the faces that we think might not cleat the tooling axis will clear the tooling axis. Here two bisecting lines one on X-axis and one on Y-axis are created and later the same bisecting lines are used to create the tooling axis.
Finally, with the help of the tooling axis draft analysis is performed. Here the faces of the component when they have a minimum of 3° angle the analysis are displayed in green color, for 0° red and negative values is blue.
