Week 8:- 3D Finishing - Challenges 1
1. What do you understand by 3D finishing process ?
- The 3D process is the fianl stage when the design is completed and is needed to be freezed. The design is then given for the manufacturing process.
- Simulation is done on the finished design to check for flaws and feasability
2. What are the points need to be taken care of while finishing the design?
- All the parts should be in nominal.
- All the holes should be concentric
- Take care of the machine area
- Follow the hole coloring standard
- Pneumatic layout
- Check for the gaps
- Avoiding the clashes between different parts.
- Proper renaming of the parts as per standard
3. What are rough Locators & what is their use?
- Rough locators are used to locate the parts in the assembly during the automation process.
- The rough locator are used for where when manual loading of the parts are to be implemented.
- These are used as the guides for locating the panel.
- These also help for poke-yoke
- Mild steel is used for rough locator
4. What are the points you need to consider while designing a rough locator?
- Height of the rough locator should not be more than the permissible ergonomic design.
- The top point must be 10-15mm above the panel surface.
- Rough locator must have adjustment in the direction of the guiding plane.
- 2 mm gap to be maintained between rough locator and the panel at the time of design.
- Rough locator can be rod type or flat type depending on the standard.
5. What is the gun study process?
The gun study process is the process in which the various gun are placed in the design and the design feasibilty is checked depending on the available space and the movement of the gun.
6. What are the points need to consider during the gun study?
- The gun should be free to move
- The gun should not clash with other parts, units or the workpiece itself.
7. What is pneumatic routing?
- Pneumatic routing is a system which is operated by the air
- It is an open loop system
- Pneumatic system is used over the hydraulic system.
8. What is the solenoid valve?
Solenoid valve is a electric-pneumatic valve which consists of a solenoid. The solenoid is used to actuate the valve using electricity.

9. What is the valve bank?
The valve blank is the collection of the valve together which are needed in the BIW fixture unit.

10. What is sensor & brief about its application in automation?
A sensor is device which is used to measure the physical property, record data, responds to the change is the enviorment or responds to the output of some other system.
It converts the physical action into a measureable voltage
- Use of sensors in automation:
The sensors are widely used in automtion to measure various physical changes in the enviornment. The sersor are used for meausring changes in height, temperature, weight, etc.
The sensors also play a major role in maitaining a safe working enviornment.
11. What are the types of the sensor?
Temperature sensor: This sensor is used to detect the rise or fall is the temperature of the enviornment.

Infrared sensor: This sensor is use to detect the heat in the enviornment or the object.

Strain Gauge: This sensor is used to detect the change in the lenght of an object
Sonic sensor: These sensors are used for detecting the sound waves.
Pressure sensor: This sensor is used for detecting the pressure in the working enviornment.

Torque sensor: This sensor is used to measure the torque applied on any shaft or to measure the twist in the shaft.

Force sensor: This sensor is used to measure the force applied/ acting on an object.
Voltmeter: This sensor is used for measuring the voltage

Ammeter: This sensor is used for measuring the current in a system

Color sensor: This sensor is used for detecting the different wavelenght of the light

Proximity sensor: This sensor is used to detect/measure the distance between the sensor and the object

12. What are the fundamental points that need to consider while designing or selection of sensor?
- The sensor should be standard sensor
- The sensor should cover all the area of the panel.
- The sensor should be placed according to the need.
