Week 7-Long Piston With Cam
AIM: The main aim of this week challenge is to perform a transient structural analysis of long piston with cam. The analysis is performed for three cases with Frictionless contact, Frictional contact with 0.1 and 0.2 as frictional co-effitient. From all the three cases compare the results of the stress, strain and deformation plots with a detailed explanation for the plots.
PROCEDURE:
step 1: Open the ansys workbench module and select the transient structural analysis.
step 2: Right click the geomentry tab and select import geomentry --> browse --> select the file --> open.
step 3: Now open the geomentry in mechanical modeller.

step 4:Now assign the material for the cam, barrel and follower.

step 5: Now create the contact between the barrel and follower, follower and cam.

step 6: Now create the necessary joints the components to get the appropriate motion.

step 7: Now create a mesh sizing of 3mm for the contact face between follower and cam and mesh the model.

step 8: Now cange the analysis settings.

step 9: Now run the simulation.
step 10: Now include the total deformation,Equivalent stress and strain in output files.
step 11: Now change the model as per the question and run the simulation
Step 12: Compare the result plot and give a detailed explanation.
OUTPUT REQUEST:
CASE: 1

CASE: 2

CASE: 3

CONCLUSION:
| EQUIVALENT STRESS | TOTAL DEFORMATION | ELASTIC STRAIN | ||||
| MIN | MAX | MIN | MAX | MIN | MAX | |
| CASE 1 | 0.0851 | 1451.5 | 2.37 | 3.01 | 6.55E-06 | 0.0073 |
| CASE 2 | 0.0843 | 1588.1 | 2.36 | 2.98 | 6.49E-06 | 0.00798 |
| CASE 3 | 0.0835 | 1730.9 | 2.34 | 2.96 | 6.44E-06 | 0.0087 |
Based on the above result, we could infer that the stress value is maximum in 3rd case where the contacts are frictional with co-effitient .2 and the least stress occour at 1st case. For all the three cases the maximum stress occour at the same location at the stem of the follower.Since in all the cases the material is same and the stresses are increasing which in turn increases the strain. Thus the strain is maximum at 3rd case and the strain is minimum in 1st case.
The total deformation is also maximum in the 3rd cases. Thus this concludes that if the frictional co-effitient is increasing the stress, strain and deformations are increasing.
