Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

OBJECTIVE:

  • To set up a Piston and Cam mechanism model in Transient Analysis with different case setup and comparing the results

Steps:

Import Geometry:-

  • Import the geometry from the saved location
  • Open the Geometry in space claim and check for any abnormalties in the model
  • In this set up we will be using the default material for all three cases

Mechanical workbench:-

  • Rename the geometry according to the convinience
  • Assign Barrel and Barrel Cam stiffness behaviour as Rigid

Define Contacts:-

  • For case 1 Establish the connection as frictionless
  • For case 2 Establish the connection as frictional with 0.1 as frictonal co-efficient
  • For case 3 Establish the connection as frictional with 0.2 as frictonal co-efficient

Define Joints:-

  • Fixed Body to ground joint for Barrel
  • Revolute Body to ground for face of Barrel Cam
  • Translation body to body load, Mobile= Cam; Refrence=Barrel

Meshing:-

  • Create a default mesh for all the parts
  • Create face sizing for faces which are in contact with element size as 3mm

Analysis Settings:-

  • Create a analysis setting with 12 steps
  • Information for 1st step is shown in below image
  • Information from 2nd to 12th step is shown in below image

Define Load:-

  • Define the revolute load with magnitude aa tabular data as shown below

RESULTS and CONCLUSION:

Case 1:-

  • Directional Deformation
  • Equivalent Stress
  • Equivalent Strain

Case 2:-

  • Directional Deformation
  • Equivalent Stress
  • Equivalent Strain

Case 3:-

  • Directional Deformation
  • Equivalent Stress
  • Equivalent Strain
  • Case Equivalent Stress(Mpa) Equivalent Strain(mm/mm) Deformation(mm)
    1 1133.3 0.0056974 12.556
    2 1224.7 0.0063521 12.584
    3 1493 0.0077162 12.619
  • From the above results we can see the results, that Max stress should occur wherever the friction co efficient is high
  • Keeping this in mind we can see the case 3 is having higher stress, so the recieved output is correct
  • Defromation is same in all the cases, the diffrences are negligible
  • Strain is alos more in Case 3
