Week 7-Long Piston With Cam
Title: Long Piston with Cam
Objective: To perform Transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism with different coefficient of friction values and compare Equivalent stress , Equivalent elastic strain and Total deformations in all cases.
Case setup:
- Structural steel is assigned to all 3 components.
- Fixed barrel cam and follower are made Rigid.
Contacts:
There are 2 contacts :

Joints:
Fixed joint for barrel cam up

Revolute joint for Barrel cam down

Translational joint for follower

Mesh:
Global mesh size of: 5mm
Local sizing for few faces of: 2mm
No of Nodes: 6650
Analysis Settings:
Followed as per video.
- Rotation is given to Cam as per video
Results:
Case1: Frictional less contacts

Case2: Frictional contacts with 0.1 coefficient of friction

Case3: Frictional contacts with 0.2 coefficient of friction

Results are Tabulated as shown below:
| S.No | Max.Equivalent Stress(Mpa) | Max.Equivalent Strain(mm/mm) | Total deformation(mm) | |
| 1 | Frictionless | 3071.5 | 0.01545 | 35.921 |
| 2 | Frictional with 0.1 u | 3354.9 | 0.016896 | 35.921 |
| 3 | Frictional with 0.2 u | 3608.5 | 0.018162 | 35.921 |
Conclusions:
With increase in Coefficient of friction as per results we can see that Max. Equivalent stress as well as Max. equivalent elastic strain has increased.
But total deformation remains same in all three cases.
