Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

Aim :

To analysis the given model of long piston with cam for three different cases using ANSYS software.

Objective :

The objective of the long piston with cam is to analysis the model for three different cases given below.

Case 1 : To define the contacts as frictionless and find the required solution.

Case 2 : To define the contact as frictional with coefficient of 0.1 and find the required solution.

Case 3 : To define the contact as frictional with coefficient of 0.2 and find the required solution.

Given model :

A cam is a rotating or sliding piece in a mechanical linkage used especially in transforming rotary motion into linear motion. In this model we compare with frictionless and frictional values to know about the changes happen in the model.

Procedure :

We start from workbench and Transient structural choose analysis.

In Transient structural we add material property which is required for the analysis.

We import the given model to the geometry tab.

These operations are performed in work bench and for model tab we move to mechanical setup screen.

In mechanical window we add data which is required to solve the process.

We define the material as structural steel for the given model.

In contacts we define the contacts as frictionless between cam follower and barrel cam and second contact between the cam follower and barrel.

Case 1 : To define the contacts as frictionless and find the required solution.

In joints we define three different types of joints one is fixed body ground for barrel, translational body to body between barrel and cam follower and revolute body ground for the barrel cam.

The meshing is applied for the contact faces and rest are considered as rigid so we won't see any mesh in that area.

In analysis settings we do analysis for 9 steps with weak springs as programme control, large deflection ON and in nonlinear controls we define the energy dissipation of 0.1 with activation for first step.

We define the rotational values for revolute joint for the rotation of barrel cam.

We derive the solution required for the given model in solution tab. The solution images are given below.

Case 1 : The required solutions are.

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent elastic strain :

Directional deformation X :

Directional deformation Y :

Case 2 : To define the contact as frictional with coefficient of 0.1 and find the required solution.

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent elastic strain :

Directional deformation X :

Directional deformation Y :

Case 3 : To define the contact as frictional with coefficient of 0.2 and find the required solution.

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent elastic strain :

Directional deformation X:

Directional deformation Y :

Conclusion :

We ran the analysis for three different cases and the required solution values are tabulated below to compare.

From the above table it is clear that the maximum stress strain values occured in friction co-efficient of 0.2 and the values decrease when it we reduce the frictional co-efficient to 0.1.

Result :

The given model of long piston with cam is analysed and got the required solution successfully using ANSYS software.
