Challenge

Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

Long Piston With Cam

AIM :

For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model that has been provided to you. You need to run the analysis with Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as the frictional contact for a total of 3 cases. Find out the Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain and compare them for all the three cases. Give an inference as to why the results vary between cases.

PROCESS:

  • Download the model and import into Geometry of transisent structure in ansys workbench
  • Open the geometry and check if any errors or distrotations are present in the model

  • Update & open the model
  • Rename the geometry and make rigid for barrel & barrel cam

  • Impart frictionless contact between the parts

  • Make the joints as
  • Fixed

  • Revolute

  • Translation

  • Face sizing for the mesh for contact areas

  • Process the analysis settings as followed

  • Use joint for the rotation of the Barrel

  • Assigne solution as required

SOLUTION:

  • Equivalent Stress

  • Directional Deformation

  • Equivalent Elastic Strain

CASE 2:

PROCESS:

  • Duplicate the Frictionless and open the model
  • Go to the contacts and change the frictionless to friction & assigne coofficient to 0.1

  • Clear the data of solution and go for solve

SOLUTION:

  • Equivalent Stress

  • Directional Deformation

  • Equivalent Elastic Strain

CASE 3:

PROCESS:

  • Duplicate the Frictionless and open the model
  • Go to the contacts and change the frictionless to friction & assigne coofficient to 0.2

  • Increase the sizing element size to 2 mm and mesh it
  • Clear the data of solution and go for solve

SOLUTION:

  • Equivalent Stress

  • Directional Deformation

  • Equivalent Elastic Strain

COMPARE ALL:

  • Directional Deformation
  • Equivalent Elastic Strain
  • Equivalent Stress
FRICTIONLESS 20.305MM 0.0017361 345.63MPa
FRICTION 0.1 20.333MM 0.017132 3372.4MPa
FRICTION 0.2 20.387MM 0.025672 5122.9MPa

Conclusion:

  • For all 3 cases Directional Deformation is almost same so no need to much focus on it.
  • With respect to Equivalent Stress when the friction coefficient is 0.2 it is much high as 5122.9MPa so prefer it least
  • With respect to Equivalent Elastic Strain when the friction coefficient is 0.2 it is high as 0.025672 so prefer it least

Finally, Prefer frictionless than case 2 &3.
