Week-6 : Turbocharger Modelling

Answer:-

Aim:- To study the performance of turbochrger- modelling.

Introduction:-

A turbocharger is a device fitted to a vehicle’s engine that is designed to improve the overall efficiency and increase performance.

This is the reason why many auto manufacturers are choosing to turbocharge their vehicles.

A)

The types of the Turbo-Chargers are:-

1. Single-Turbo
2. Twin-Turbo
3. Twin-Scroll Turbo
4. Variable Geometry Turbo
5. Variable Twin Scroll Turbo
6. Electric Turbo

  1. Example model of a 3.4L twin/parallel turbo V6 direct-injected (GDI) gasoline engine.

2. This example demonstrates a turbocharged SI engine with a semi-predictive intercooler. The model runs at steady state engine speeds with wide-open throttle (WOT).

3. This example demonstrates a turbocharged SI engine with a semi-predictive intercooler. The model runs at steady state engine speeds with wide-open throttle (WOT)

4. This example demonstrates a turbocharged SI engine with a semi-predictive intercooler. The model runs at steady state engine speeds with wide-open throttle (WOT).

B)

Compressor Map:-

Operating Point:

Pressure Ratio:-3.65

Reduced Mass Flow Rate:-0.07663(kg/sec)-K^0.5/kPa

Turbine Map:-

Reduced Mass Flow Rate:-0.04525(kg/sec)-K^0.5/kPa

Pressure Ratio:-3.043

C)Variable Geometry Turbine:-

It is basically used to maintained the effective aspect ratio in the turbo-charge,

  • When there is higher aspect ratio, then turbo will not able to create the boost at low speed.
  • When there is lower aspect ratio, then turbo will choke the engine at high speed.

In this conditions, the Variable Geometry Turbine is very useful.

By altering the aspect ratio and keeping it on the optimum value, we can increase the efficiency of the engine and also can avoid the turbo lag.

Turbine Map:-

Conclusion:-

From the above graphs of compressor and turbine map it is observed that the operating point in the both the graphs is at the very low pressure ratio and mass flow values, so the engine have constraint to work at this minimum value only to get better efficiency.
