Week 6-Introduction to Ansys ACT Challenge
AIM: To perform the given instructions and obtain the desired results.
- What is an API?
Ans: An Application Program Interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. Basically, an API specifies how software components should interact.
- What are binary and Scripted Extensions?
Binary Extensions: they are usually provided by the developers in an uneditable format. On building a binary extension, a ".WBEX" (WorkBench EXtension)file is obtained. Since these files are schared in an uneditable format, they doesnt need license to be exicuted.
Scripted Extensions: they are used during the extension phase ans are usually saved in the form of .XML and IronPython functions. To edit the scripted extension file, ANSYS Customisation Suit License is needed.
2. Perform the following
- Install the given scripted extensions
Ans: To install the given scripted extension, following steps are needed to be followed:
1. Go to TOOL, then select OPTIONS, then select EXTENSIONS and upload the file location in the given section.
From the Extension Manager dialogue box, it can be seen that the defined scripted extension is installed and is define.

- Delete GUID from given scripted extension and try to install it, read the log file.
- From the scripted extensions, create a Binary extensions and install it in workbench
On reading the log, no GUID error was determined and the Binary File was created.
in the defined file location, "selectionToolbar.wbex" was generated.

3. Perform the following
Install the 'Selection Toolbar' binary extension and import the given gear model. Using the 'Selection Toolbar' option, create named selections for the below given specifications:

The Selection Toolbar' binary extension was installed.
- All the cylindrical faces in the gears
Under Named Selections, Cylindrical Faces were generated.

- All the common edges of the gears
106 common edges were determined.

- All the faces smaller than 10 mm^2
154 faces were detected for the given condition.

- All the vertices of the faces smaller than 10 mm^2
412 Vertices were determined within the given conditions.

- Select entities smaller than the cylindrical surfaces
206 faces were determined for the given condition.

CONCLUSION
From a given scripted extension, a binary extension was generated. The generated binary extension was later utilised to fulfil the given conditions.
- All the cylindrical faces in the gears = resulted in 158 Faces
- All the common edges of the gears = resulted in 106 Edges
- All the faces smaller than 10 mm^2 = resulted in 154 faces
- All the vertices of the faces smaller than 10 mm^2 = resulted in 412 Vertices
- Select entities smaller than the cylindrical surfaces = resulted in 206 Faces
The resultant .wbpj and .mechdat file for the workbench and .wbex file for the scripted to binary extension files have been attached.
