Week 6 - Creating connection for Rear door

Aim: To establish connections in the part wherever is deemed necessary to make the model rigid without compromising certain degrees of freedom to achieve best possible simulation.

Procedures:

  • At first the potential connection points are identified.
  • Then kind of connection is figured out.
  • Suitable connections are made accordingly.

For RBE2 > many nodes connections, the nodes at the hole(s)’ edge(s) are selected to define the connection. A property must be assigned to it.

For RBE2 > two nodes connections, two master nodes of RBE2 connections are selected and a connection is established.

For CONM > CONM2 > Nodes, a node of RBE2 > two node connection is selected and a mass is assigned.

For Bolt connection, a 3D point is created for the hole and then converted into bolt connection. Later it is modified with connection manager.

For Spot Weld connection, a 3D point is created on the surface and then converted into spot weld connection. Connection manager is used to select the parts and set the search distance. The FE representation type is RBE3-HEXA-RBE3.

For seam line connection, a curve is created and converted into seam line. With the help of connection manager, the search distance is set and all branches is selected. The FE representation type is RBE3-CBUSH-RBE3.

For seam weld, a curve is converted into seam weld. In the connection manager, the FE representation type is chosen viz. Y-JOINT SHELL (non-parallel parts) and OVERLAPPING SHELL (parallel parts). The height and width of the weld is set as well as project to base option. The parts r selected and the base metal is set.

Completed Model:

Learning Outcome: I learned about the different type of connections and which one to be deployed where with respect to practical engineering.

Conclusion: The connections can be improved by getting CAD model data.
