Week 6 - CHT Analysis on a Graphics card

Introduction: Graphics cards are computing equiments that are made up of components that help in utilizing the processor's computing power. The fins are placed to provide maximum heat extraction from the processor. As we shall see the presence of maximum surface (fins) area and presence of varying velocity helps in better cooling.

The geometry given below shows a typical graphics card.

As the mesh is crucial for better understanding of the Heat transfer coefficient it is crucial that the features are captured. for example the processor is as:

Case setup:

A laminar solver is used.

Defining material for the Grapics card

Plastic (Polycarbonate)

Silicon

Assiginig material and source term to the processor and other components.

As in this case we do not concern with external flow simulation the relevence of enclosure is just to have a velocity field for fluid. As it is important for carrying out Conjugate Heat Transfer analysis.

as there are more cells in the processor it shows a close to accurate result as the quantities for more number of cells without any loss of resolution.

The study is conducted for 3 cases for velocities of:

  1 m/s 3 m/s 5 m/s
Max temperature attained 328.98 315.32 311.88
Average heat transfer coefficient 6.71 18.37 26.66

The convergence can be understood once the residuals attend a constant values and are either flutuating o a regular interval (repeating pattern) or stabalised. Also as we consider the propert of intrest, we would like for it to stabilize in which case we conclude that the solution is converged.

The following shows that the solution converged for all the cases in study.

Case 1) 1m/s

Case 2) 3m/s

Case 3)

5m/s

As it can be seen from the plots that the solution has converged for all the cases.

Further the contour plots for each case is shown.

1m/s 3m/s 5m/s

Although the significane of the velocity is minimal in terms of the whole enclosure it is important to see the near component significance. The velocity is important as higher velocity will have higher HTC, as the heat ejection is more from the fin.
