Challenge

Week 6 Challenge

Aim and Introduction:

  • To calculate the pipe load acting on the bridge.
  • The pipe load comes under the category of utility loads.
  • The utility loads are

             1. Electrical lamp post,

             2. Traffic signal post,

             3. Pipe loads,

             4. collision and other utility loads,

  • The Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural elements are considered to be utility loads
  • In this challenge, we are going to design a bridge that carries a pipe of 200mm and 700mm diameter.
  • normally the pipe is supported by thrust blocks, when an obstruction came we use the bridge to connect the pipe from one end to another end.
  • In the challenge the bridge which carries the pipe, the pipe's self-weight will main load and liquid which carries may be water, oil, or any other kind of chemicals.
  • let's calculate the load for the given D.I pipe and apply it to the bridge.

Procedure :

  • The self-weight of the pipe and live load due to pipe is needed to be calculated
  • The total load due to the pipe is
  •

  • Design the bridge using staad pro, enter the node values for two ends.

  • use translational repeat command in the geometry tab enter number of steps as 1 with the spacing of 3m in z-direction,
  • The 3 metre specifies the width of the bridge.

  • after specifying the width of the bridge, now use translational repeat command again for specifying its length, provide length as 24m.
  • enter the spacing value as 12m with a number of steps as 2 click on link steps, remove unnecessary members.

  • The next step is to provide support for the piers, we can give fixed support.
  • In the specification, tab click on fixed support and add it.
  • select the bottom nodes of each pier and assign the support to selected nodes.

  • The next is to assign a property, click on prismatic and add a circular section of 1.5-metre dia.
  • select the piers and assign the circular sectional property to selected piers.

  • Add a node along the width of the bridge for adding a 200mm dia pipe
  • Click on the geometry and use the insert node command a dialogue box will appear enter the required distance and click on add new point
  • repeat the same and add the nodes for the other two ends and add beam by connecting the nodes.

  • insert another node for a 700mm dia pipe.
  • Click on the insert node command and enter the required value and select add a new point.
  • create beam using add beam command.

  • insert node for creating the bottom chord bracing as per dimensions given in question repeat the same procedure for adding nodes,
  • create the nodes at a spacing of 3 m each and add them at both the side.

  • connect the nodes by using add beam command, thus the beam has been created.
  • 200m dia and 700m dia pipe were also added.
  • the cross girders have been created.

  • connect the cross girders by referring to the question.
  • connect it by using add beam command-click on the corner node, connect it at the centre node and connect again at the corner that forms an arrow-like beam.

  • The snap shows the longitudinal section of the girder that provides support to the pipe-carrying bridge.
  • use translational repeat command in the y-direction and click on the link steps, provide the required spacing and no of steps.

  • The above image is the bottom chord bracing.

  • The 3-dimensional view of the bridge shows piers and the 700mm and 200mm pipe.

  • The property has been assigned to bottom chord bracings and the girders.
  • circular sections 200 and 700 mm had been assigned to the pipe.

  • The above section are assigned to the members.

  • now loading is needed to be added, click on load case details add it as member load by giving uniform force.
  • Enter the calculated value and use the minus symbol to indicate the load acting downwards, click on the global y-direction then click add apply it to the 700mm dia pipe.

  • Now enter the loading for 200mm dia pipe, use minus symbol to indicate the load acting downwards.
  • click on global y direction and add it.

  • The above two images shows the loading diagram for both the pipes.
  • And also self weight is need to be added click loading in the load cases details add self weight use factor 1 in the y direction.
  • after loading click on post processing analysis to enter the into analysis tab.

Results :

  • Click on the run analysis command in analysis and design command to check with errors, after that click on post-processing mode to analyze the structural behaviour due to pipe load.

  • Bending moment in z direction due to 700mm dia pipe load.

  • Shear diagram in y direction due to load 1,700mm dia pipe's load.

  • Thus the bridge has been designed and the pipe load had applied over it .
