Week 6.1 - Setting up a model (Electronic enclosure)

Objective:

To perform thermal simulation on model which was simplified earlier in week3 with geometric enclouser. Thermal simulation is done by applying required boundary condtions and necessary assumptions to the model.

Steps to be performed:

1.Import simplified geometry into ansys icepak

2.Generate mesh for given model based on promitive shapes

3. Check quality of mesh of given cad model

4. Perform post processing with necessary conditions

Meshing:

Types of Meshing:

MEsher HD
1.for both promitive and cad objects
2.in mesher hd you can do multi level meshing
3. in mesher hd hexahedral, tetra hedral and polyhedral

Unstructerd mesh
for all icepak primitives including circle, cylinder, polygons
it is not used for cad geometryt has only hexahedral elements

Hexa cartesian

in hexa cartesian all mesh in plane on axis
mesh looklike stair steps
it is not used for cad geometry has only hexahedral elements

Meshing:

1.For given cad model you can generate both types of meshes 1)Mesher HD 2)Un-structured mesh

2.I used Un-structured mesh if Multi level meshing is required go for Mesher HD

3.Generate mesh Number of elements in model=144487 and no of nodes=152132

2.Mesh cutplane along X-axis

3.Mesh cut plane along y-axis

4.Mesh cutplane along Z-axis

5.Volume mesh of model

6.Take Twosources 1)Big square box 2)Small square box and power each square box is 1W

1)Big square box (Power=1W)

2)Small square box (Power=1W)

Post-processing:

1)Problem setup

1.Solve for velocity,temperature and pressure

2. Flow is buoyancy driven

3.use boussinesq approximation

4.Operating pressure and y-gravity(g=-9.80665)

5.Flow regime is turbulent (Zero equation)

6.Ignore heat transfer due to radiation

7. variable dont vary with time

Basic parameters:

2) Solution settings

Advanced settings:

Contours:

Residual plots:

Temperature contours:

Conclusion:

1.Min temp range=67.6609 oC and max temp range= 68.8698 oC

2.velocity and pressure values are negligible in this cad model of free convection
