Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Aim- To perform the static structural for the given spere pressing on a plate challenge.

Objective

  • Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non-Linear.
  • Press the sphere onto the plate 4mm downwards and retract it.
  • The plastic deformation of the result can be plotted.

Procedure- To start the simulation by opening with the Ansys workbench.

Select the static structure from the toolbox as shown below shown.

In static structural select to assign the material property in engineering data.

Selecting the material property as the structural steel for the spere and structural steel NL for the plate as shown below.

Update the engineering data as shown below.

Also import the geometry from the browse with the updated geometry.

After updating the geometry double click on the model, its popup with the model window.

The below shown the model can be taken as the 1/4th of the spere and plate has been shown.

Set the proper naming for the given sphere and plate. Also, select the structural steel NL for the plate.

The symmetric region has been selected in such a way that the symmetry geometry as symmetry normal for the z-axis and x-axis as shown below.

The proper selection process is to be shown below.

The geometry selection has to be select the contact body as the spere and target bodies as the plate.

The mesh size will be 2 mm and mesh sizing for the spere select it as the 1mm as shown below.

The generating the mesh to the spere and plate is shown below.

Set for the analysis setting the steps as the 4, solver type will be direct and large deflection will be on as shown below.

In static structural select the fixed support for the plate bottom, by selecting the face in geometry as shown below.

The displacement has to select the spere in such a way that select the face and set tabular data for the y axis, its shows the direction.

For assigning all parameters solve it as shown below.

The directional deformation that will occur for the plate will be below shown. The max. 0.35198mm and min. -4mm

The static structural process consists of the max. the stress of 3275MPa on the plate as shown below.

The equivalent strain has been shown on the plate max. of 0.044433mm and also min. is 2.0987e-8mm

The equivalent strain has been shown on the spere will be negligible max. of 0.044433mm and also min. is 2.0987e-8mm

The plastic strain that has been shown on the plate will get the permanent plastic deformation of max. of 1.5553mm as shown below.

The tabulated all results for Sphere pressing on a plate as shown below.

Stress Directional Deformation Elastic Strain Plastic Strain
Sphere pressing on a plate 3275MPa 0.35198mm 0.044433mm 1.5553mm

Conclusion

To perform this analysis came to concluded that the plate with the nonlinear property of material will undergo permanent plastic deformation when the impact from the spere.
