Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

AIM:

Perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.

OBJECTIVE:

To simulate the sphere ball pressing with two material, the plate is assigned to the structural steel non-linear, the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it which is of structural steeel. After evaluating the results, the plastic deformation needs to be captured.

PROCEDURE:

. Select Static Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
. Choose material of as Structural Steel NL, under Engineering Data in non linear materials.
. Under geometry tab, import the given sphere bending plate geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to register the model and then update it.
. Then open Mechanical Module, assign Structural Steel NL to the plate. The sphere can remain at structural steel.
. Assign a frictional connection between the sphere and plate with coefficient of friction = 0.74. (value taken from royal mech useful tribology site)
. Assign Symmetry to 2 faces(i.e of shphere and plate) with X-axis and Z-axis respectively.
. The mesh size was set to default, and the sphere and plate were given 0.5mm mesh sizing, respectively.
. Under static structural tab, we set the analysis to 4 steps with auto timestep as programmed.
. A displacement of -4mm in 2 steps is given along Y axis for the sphere, and the other 2 steps are to lift the sphere back to the initial position to prove the plate has been non-linearly deformed.
. Directional Deformation in Z-axis, Equivalent Plastic Strain and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
. Equivalent Stress to prove the plate has been deform non-linearly(i.e plastic deformation).
. Run the simulation by clicking on SOLVE.

These below images are the conditions ,contacts and material properties, meshing used in the simulation.

RESULTS SUMMARY

After pressing the plate by 4mm distance by the sphere and preventing back to its position it shows the plasticity of the structural steel Non-linear material of the plate as this shows in the directional deformation at a max of 1.692mm and equivalent elastic strain is of 8.5826e-003mm/mm.

CONCLUSION

AS we can see from the above results table that the stress developed on the plate is 1572.6 MPa which is above its yield strength 250MPa ,this shows that the material undergoes plastic deformation.
