Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

OBJECTIEVE:

  • Set up the model for static analysis when sphere pressed over a plate
  • We need to see the plastic strain occured in plate

STEPS:

Add materials:-

  • Open static structural analysis system, select the material from engineering data
  • Engineering data>Engineering data sources>General Non linear materials>Select Structural steel NL
  • Add Structural steel and Structural steel NL material for this case

Import the geometry:-

  • Import the geometry from saved loacation
  • Open the model in space claim to make any edit and to check the model for any abnormality
  • Now we have proper model no edit is required
  • We will move to Mechanical Workbench for Setting up the model

Mechanical Workbench:-

  • Rename the geometry for convinience
  • Assign Structural steel for sphere and structural steel NL for plate
  • Go to contact and delete default contacts and create manual contact
  • Establish the contacts between Sphere and Plate

Symmetric region:-

  • Define the symmetric region by selcting the faces of plate and sphere with respect to their direction like shown below

  • above image is for symmetric region with respect to X-axis

above image shows symmetric region with respect to Z-axis

Mesh:-

  • Mesh the model with element size as 0.5mm for refined mesh
  • Refine mesh is used for more accurate result
  • make sure the number of nodes does not cross academic version
  • Meshed model is shown in below image

Analysis setting:-

  • I have kept the number of step as 5
  • Large deflection is ON, Solver type is Direct

Define Load:-

  • First define the fixed support for bottom face of plate, inorder not to move
  • Then define a Displacement load on top surface of sphere
  • As it is mentioned in above question, the total distance travelled by sphere in y direction should be 4mm and retracted it back

Output Request:-

  • Directional deformation of sphere in y direction
  • Equivalent stress for Plate
  • Equivalent Strain for Sphere
  • Equivalent strain for whole model

RESULTS:

  • Directional deformation of sphere in Y direction= -4mm

  • Equivalent Stress=3649.1 Mpa

  • Equivalent Strain=0.018248 mm/mm

CONCLUSION:

  • In the above case we can see the directinal deformation in y axis is -4mm, the negative symbols indicates it moved in negative Y direction
  • The maximum Stress generated is in Plate
  • The maximum strain is also generated in plate
  • In this case the Plate is deofrmed and sphere did not because of the material used in plate is non linear
