Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate
Aim of the project:
To perform the static structural analysis of Sphere pressing on a flat plate and capture plastic deformation when sphere pressed by 4mm on to Nonlinear structural steel.
Analyze the results for Von-mises stress, Directional deformation and Equivalent elastic strain for plate and Sphere.
Set Up
- In the Ansys workbench we chose static structural analysis and in engineering data we kept the material structural steel as it is and along with that, we added material structural steel Non Linear.
- After Importing the Sphere and plate model in the Geometry, We opened Mechanical module by clicking Edit to the model tab.
- Renamed the model accordingly and assigned material Structural steel Non Linear to the plate.
- Now under connections we added a manual contact region between Sphere and plate as shown below with the Co-efficient of Friction value 0.74.

- In the Analysis settings We have changed the Number of steps as 6 , solver type to Direct and made large deflection on since we are using Nonlinear material.
- Added Fixed support and arrested the base of plate.
- Added displacement load of 4mm in 6 different steps as shown below, So that sphere will retract after loading.

- As the model is Symmetric geometry, we have added 2 symmetry region with respect to Z and X direction as shown below
- Finally, we requested the desired solutions and got the results as shown below.
- Directional deformation of maximum 0.35mm
-
Von mises Stress of maximum 3032Mpa
-
Equivalent Strain on Plate is maximum 1.5161e-002mm/mm
-
Equivalent Strain on Sphere is maximum 4.2066e-6mm/mm
With this We have captured the plastic deformation while Sphere is pressing a Non linear steel plate.
