Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints
Aim of the project:
To perform the static structural analysis on the welding joints and compare the results with three different set of materials which are STAINLESS STEEL, Aluminum alloy, and Bronze.
Compare the results for Von-mises stress, Deformation in Y direction and Equivalent elastic strain in varied material conditions.
Set Up
- In the Ansys workbench we chose static structural analysis and in engineering data wet we added material Stainless steel, Aluminum alloy and Bronze with below properties.
- After Importing Weld joints assembly model in the Geometry, We opened Mechanical module by clicking Edit to the model tab. For the first set up of analysis we have used Stainless steel as material for all plates.
There were several bonded contacts in this model, we have converted 5 of them as frictional contacts as shown below.
We adjusted the mesh sizing to minimum possible body sizing which is 6mm
We applied Fixed support in the 5 holes of big plate as shown below.
We have applied the Force of 12,000N in Y dirction.
We solved for Stress, Directional deformation in Y direction and Equivalent Strain having all plates and Ribs as stainless steel material. Results are shown below.

We have changed the Rib material as Aluminium alloy and solved for Directional deformation and Equivalent strain, Results are shown below.
Now we changed Wedjoint material as Bronze, Ribs as Copper and both plates as stainless steel Results shown below.

Table showing compararison of all 3 results

We observed more deflection in the Y direction in case of Brazing and there was more load of 15,000N in that case.
In the case of stainles steel material and steel weld joints it is observed that compratively less stress and less deformation was observed.
Below shown weld joint experienced highest equivalent stress.

Thank you very much.
