Week 2 Railwheel and Track
Aim of the project:
To perform the static structural analysis on the Rail wheel and track set up.
Compare the results for Von-mises stress, Total deformation and Equivalent elastic strain in varied bearing Load conditions.
Set Up
- In the Ansys workbench we chose static structural analysis and in engineering data we chose material as structural steel, with below properties.

- After Importing Rail wheel model in the Geometry, We opened Mechanical module by clicking Edit to the model tab.
- We selected 2 frictional contacts and its faces between wheel and track and also between shaft and wheel as shown below.
- Then we added 3 joint connections, Fixed, Translational and Planar as shown below.
- We chose general mesh size as 50mm and for face sizing 35mm, Mesh came well as shown below.
- After doing the necessary analysis setting we applied Bearing load of 100000N and also Joint load in displacement of 100mm each in 5 steps.
- Finally we added all solutions required and got the results as shown in attached videos.
- Now we increased the Bearing Load by 5 times and compared the results as tabulated below.
Bearing Load
Von-Mises Stress
Equivalent Strain
Total deformation
100000N
91.244Mpa (Max)
0.0005910mm/mm (Max)
999.04mm (Max.)
500000N
442.14Mpa(Max.)
0.0027903mm/mm(Max.)
998.78mm (Max.)
- Conclusion for case1: We observed simultaneous increase in the stress and strain while we increase Bearing Load. there was also very slight difference in deformation. Also one more point to notice to get the results is we need to refine the mesh size accordingly when we increase the bearing Load.
Case 2:
We have set the user defined results with the help of expressions and got the displacement which is nothing of total deformation. Both the results are shown below and video attached.

Observation:
There was difference in total deformation also when Bearing load was increased.
In the initial load of 100000N maximum deformation was 1.0861e-018 mm but when load increased to 500000N it increased up to 2.186e-17mm.
So through this user defined expression exercise we learnt thant Total deformation also increases along with increase in Bearing Load.
