Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Aim: Observe the plastic deformation of a sphere over a plate

Analysis Setup: Select Non linear structural steel for both plate and ball. Import the geometry.

The geometry imported is not the complete one, as it is symmentric only quarter of the ortion was taken for the analysis to reduce the solving time.

In order to show the symmetry, two symmetry regions were added.

A frictional contact with coefficient of frction as 0.74(the value is taken from a table which provides standard values of coefficient of friction between any two given materials) taken between the sphere and plate.

Mesh: Face sizing is done to the contact area with the mesh size of 1.5mm

Boundary conditions: Fixed support is given to the plate and displacemet in the negative Y direction is given to the sphere with 5 time steps

Solution:

Equivalent stress

Directional deformation

Equivalent elastic strain on sphere

Equivalent elastic strain on plate

Result:

Material Stress (MPa) Deformation Y(mm) Strain in sphere Strain in plate
Structural steel NL

3066 (max)

0.02 (min)

3.3(max)

0.3(min)

7.2e-6(max)

1.6e-7(min)

0.015(max)

0.0006(min)

Conclusion: The sphere is pressed onto the plate with 4mm displacemet, the plate got deformed but very less deformation was observed on the sphere.
