Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
- Objective: To study the effect of change in geometry on stress concentration
- Stress concentration: It is the area where on an object where the stress is greater than the surroundings
- Modelling: The geometry is modelled in the spaceclaim as per the dimensions mentioned
- Analysis: The analysis is performed with the mesh size of 1cm and fixed at one end and applied tensile load on the other end of 500N
- Result: The results were complied for both the cases
case 1: Plate with 1 hole at the centre

case 2 Plate with 3 holes 90mm distant from the centre

The results obtained are tabulated below
| Case | Description | Max Equivalent stress(Pa) | Max Deformation (m) |
| 1 | Plate with centre hole | 6.63e5 | 3.3e-7 |
| 2 | Plate with three holes | 6.38e5 | 3.18e-7 |
Discussion
1) As we can see that the induced stresses in case 2 are lesser than the stresses induced in case 1. But the maximum deformation values are almost similar so from design point of view we can choose plate with 3 holes because of maximum factor of safety it provides
2) If we see in the manufacturing point of view the manufacturing time and cost is more for case 2 than case 1. So as the values of deformation are almost the same, to reduce the material wastage and costs it is preferable to choose a plate with single hole than a plate with 3 holes
