Challenge

Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Aim :

In this challenge it is asked to find the plastic strain of the plate which is pressed by using a sphere.

Objective :

To find the plastic deformation and Equivalent strain occurred in the plate. For analysis we take ¼ of the sphere and plate.

Given model :

The given model is a sphere pressing on plate for a displacement of 4mm downwards into the plate and to note down the deformation occurs in the plate.

Material of sphere : Structural steel,

Material of plate : Structural steel NL.

Procedure :

We start from workbench and choose static structural analysis.

In static structural we add material property which is required for the analysis.

We import the given model to the geometry tab.

These operations are performed in work bench and for model tab we move to mechanical setup screen.

In mechanical window we add data which is required to solve the process.

We define the material for sphere as structural steel and for the plate as structural steel NL.

For analysis we only work with ¼ of the model so we define the symmetry part in X and Z direction.

We define the frictional contact as sphere and the target as the plate.

The base of the plate is fixed by using joints body to ground.

Meshing is done with default values.

We do Analysis for four steps with solver type as direct and large deflection ON.

It is asked to press the sphere for 4mm on the plate so we assign displacement of 4mm in Y direction

.

After analysis the solution part is given below as a gif file.

Solution with conclusion :

Directional deformation in Y direction :

Equivalent Elastic strain :

Plastic deformation in the plate :

RESULT :

The analysis for the given sphere pressing on a plate is done successfully using ANSYS software.
