Week 5:- Rest Unit & Clamp Unit Design Challenge
PROJECT : WEEK 5 REST UNIT & CLAMP UNIT DESIGN.
AIM : TO DESIGN 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF POWER CLAMP UNIT & 2 DIFFRENT TYPE OF REST UNIT FOR GIVEN CAR PANEL.
GIVEN :

- We have this car panel stp file in which we need design clamp unit & rest unit following the design methology.
INTRODUCTION.
CLAMP UNIT :
- A clamp unit is a unit designed to clamp / hold the car panel with NC blocks / mylars / rest by using a pnewmatic clamp cylinder.

fig : 1 Clamp unit
- Clamping force is to be considered while designing the clamp unit.
Parts of clamp unit :
- Pnewmatic cylinder
- Clamp arm
- Finger / mylars
- Shims
- Risers
- Blocks
1. Pnewmatic Cylinder :
- The pnewmatic cylinder converts the pressure energy of compressed air medium into mechanical energy in form of linear or rotary motion.

- Above images shows pnewmatic cylinder with clamp arm assembly.
- Which i have used in my design.
2. Clamp arm.
- Clamp arm tha name suggest its a arm which is assembled with the cylinder , which gets connected to the clamp mylar with help of screw , nuts or bolt etc.
- It can rotate upto 180 deg to perform the operation of clamping & fixing.
- It is one the major part & important part of clamp unit.

3. Finger / mylars :
- Mylars are the part which holds the car panel.
- There are two types of mylars : Clamp mylar & Rest mylar.
- The mylar which will be mounted with the clamp is the clamp mylar & the mylar which is rested is rest mylar.

4. Shims :
- Shims are the reactangular blocks that are placed between two parts to provide proper support to both the parts. And to be merge properly.
- Shims are in set of five packs thar are 2mm , 1mm , 1mm , 0.5mm , 0.5mm etc.

4. Riser :
- The part which is mounted on the base plate and holds a clamp or pin cylinder on it, is called Riser. Riser can be Standard Part or manufactured part, it varies from project to project. A riser can be a Single part or welded part. Standard risers also have various shapes and sizes.

5. L Block :
- A plate shaped as L is called an L block. This part is used as a connection between mylar and Blade. Generally, L blocks are used to provide shimming. It is not necessary that L blocks are only used for shimming, its uses changes as per the requirements, At some places, it is used just to connect one part to another. Similar to the L block one more block is used which is in the shape of T. So this block is called a T Block.

TYPES OF CLAMP UNIT :
1. POWER CLAMP UNIT
2. SWIVEL TYPE CLAMP UNIT
DESIGNING POWER CLAMP UNIT :
- First consideration before starting design of clamp unit is the location of clamp unit in the car panel.
- We cant place the clamp unit on any curved or uneven surfaces , on the emboss surface etc.
- We have to place it on a straight surface & also have to ensure it have not collides with any others parts of fixture assembly.
POWER CLAMP UNIT DESIGN 1 :
- First power clamp unit I have designed with two clamp & two rest mylars.
- Elbow to support & connect the mylars with clamp arm , Riser & L block.
Mylar design :

Elbow support design :

Pnewmatic cylinder :
- We have standard pnewmatic cylinders from NAAMS , which I imported into catia to use in my design.

Riser design :

Elbow support block design :

L Block design :

ASSEMBLY :

POWER CLAMP UNIT DESIGN 2 :
- In the clamp unit I have designed single clamp & rest mylars.
mylar design :

Riser :

- In this design I have directly mounted mounted with clamp arm & Riser so that we dont need extra parts like Blocks , Support etc.
ASSEMBLY :

POWER CLAMP UNIT DESIGN 3 :
- In this design I have designed L type riser , L block & Single mylars to mount with clamp arm & Riser.
Mylars design :

L type riser design :

L block design :

DESIGNING THE REST UNIT :
- Rest unit are the unit designed just to support the car panel from the bottom.
- Which includes Mylars , Risers & Blocks etc.
REST UNIT DESIGN 1 :
Mylar design :

Riser design :

ASSEMBLY :

DESIGNING REST UNIT 2 :
- In this designed I have designed L type riser.
mylars design :

CONCLUSION :
- With this I conclude here designed 3 types of power clamp unit & 2 types of rest unit following the design methology.
