REVIT_Revision w.r.t to code_Week 5

QUESTION 1 ) Why are building codes or standards essential for the modeling/ efficiency of drawings in Revit ?

ANS 1 )

With the help of revit we can draw, design and model a structure. Only designing or modeling is not the task, we have to follow some basic set of rules and regulations to ensure the safety and coordination. We have many types of constructions like residential houses, apartments, shopping malls, schools and hospitals. All the constructions cannot be of the same type, they differ from each other as the purpose served by them is different. So for different type of construction we have different set of rules and regulations which can also be called as building codes or building standards.

As everyone followes the same standard codes it becomes easy to provide permission to the construction of the building. The main purpose of the building codes are to ensure safety to the people living in the place from disasters and problems. By maintaining Building codes we can also maintain coordination to the other building of the same type.

QUESTION 2) From the National Building Code list the groups that will be essential to you when you begin modeling in Autodesk Revit.

ANS 2)

From National building code(NBC) the groups that will be essential for us to begin modeling in Autodesk revit are :

  1. Architect.
  2. Civil engineer.
  3. Structural engineer.
  4. Electrical engineer.
  5. Plumbing engineer.
  6. Fire protection engineer.
  7. HVAC engineer.(ventilation)
  8. Environmental specialist.
  9. Town planner.
  10. Urban designer.
  11. Landscape architect. (Outdoor designing)
  12. Security system specialist.
  13. Interior designer.
  14. Quantity surveyor.
  15. Project / construction manager.
  16. Other subject specialists.

QUESTION 3) List the five major steps that occur in project cycle . The steps should include from conceptualization of project to maintenance and final stage.

ANS 3)

Project cycle is an important process which is developed by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Any project can be successful only with the complete help and support of the project manager. Under the project cycle we have five steps / stages, they are :

  1. Project Initiation.
  2. Project Planning.
  3. Project Execution.
  4. Project Performance/Monitoring.
  5. Project closure.

1. Project Initiation : This is the first step in the project cycle and here we set the goal and define our work. In this step we discuss about the project and start research about the project to identify the advantages and disadvantages in the project. Next we find alternate ways for the disadvantages and how to overcome them. In this step we have selection of the site, selection of design, permission and documentation.

2. Project Planning : This is a very important step as the planning or idea of the project is created. We start to prepare a basic idea about how to start the project. In this step we have to make sure we come to a approximate conclusion about the budget of the project, duration and dead line of the project and arrangement and accomodation of the labour in case to large projects.

3. Project Execution : In this step we start the work and engage into basic works like surveying, deciding the materials required, storage and construction of the foudation.

4. Project Performance/monitoring : In this step we come to an idea about our present situation of the site. We start getting advantages and disadvantages, now we have to find alternative ways for the disadvantages and how to overcome the problems. We have to appoint site managers and supervisors so as to plan a schedule and keep a check on the work.

5. Project closure : This is the final stage in the project cycle and we have to pay attention in achieving the quality of the structure and handing over the project within the correct duration after checking and inspecting the site.

QUESTION 4) Give examples of different disciplines involved in construction of a project.

ANS 4)

The different desciplines involved in construction of a project are :

  1. Structural engineering.
  2. Architects.
  3. Commissioning authority.
  4. Electrical engineering.
  5. Information Technologies.
  6. Construction.
  7. Finance and Estimating.
  8. Contracts and bids.
  9. Geotechnical engineering.
  10. Construction management.
  11. Surveying.

QUESTION 5) How are buildings classified ? Place the following buildings under each category
a. Four unit apartments
b. School with capacity of 1000 students
c. A single unit shop.
d. Multi story Shopping complex
e. Steel machine factory

ANS 5

Basically a building is classified :

  • Based on the occupancy.
  • Based on the type of construction.

There are different types of buildings like :

  • Residential buildings.
  • Educational buildings.
  • Business buildings.
  • Wholesale Establishments.
  • Hazardous buildings.
  • Storage buildings.
  • Detached buildings.
  • Institutional buildings.
  • Mercatile buildings.
  • Semi-detached buildings.
  • Industrial buildings.
  • Assembly buildings.
  • High-rise buildings.
  • Military building.
  • Religious building.

a. Four unit apartments : Residential building.

b. School with capacity of 1000 students : Educational building.

c. A single unit shop : Mercatile building.

d. Multi store shopping complex : Commercial building.

e. Steel machine factory : Industrial building.

QUESTION 6) Distinguish the roles of Design team and Management team.

ANS 6)

In the construction of a project/ building we require both the design team and the management team. We cannot complete the work one of them, they both are required and both of them play equal role in the construction of the project. They both are inter dependent on each other. The design team mainly consist of architects and designers, where as the management team consist of enggineers.

DESIGN TEAM :

The design team can also be called as architects. the design team is more than just a group of people who coordinates and plans accordingly to complete the work with the help of team work. A team contains many people and each one of them is assigned a specific task in which they are perfect. the design team is totally responsible for the idea and design. The architects give us a plan for the suitable area and shape of the site. they plan the building in such a way that we can use the maximum area even after leaving the set backs. the Architects design the plan and provide a 3D view so that we can understand the complete data about the building even before its constructed. They even give an estimate about the budget of the project.

MANAGEMENT TEAM :

The management team is a set of engineers who have mastered in different fields like structural, plumbing, electrical, civil and so on. The management team or the engineers are the one who is going to implement the plans which are created by the design team. They plan an important role in executing and carrying out the work. They ensure safety and supervising the works and find different solutions to the difficulties at the site, as we cannot say that everything goes as planned. The role of project managers, supervisors and site managers are to look after the needs of the labour and keep a check on the daily work completed and progress of the work.

QUESTION 7) Refer to NBC, Identify the modeling requirements for the project ( from week 4).
a. Height Limitations
b. Area Limitations
c. Room sizing
d. Wall height
e. Thickness based on fire life and safety
f. Passageway requirements

ANS 7)

AIM : To modify the project created in week 4 as per the rules of NBC.

TOOLS USED :

  • Architectural.
  • Walls.
  • Floor.
  • Ceiling.
  • Roof.
  • Levels.

PROCEDURE

  • First open the week 4 project in revit.
  • Select the ground floor plan view and check the dimension of the rooms and set the dimensions according to the NBC rules. For example the area of the bathroom should not be less than 1.8m square, and the minimum width of the bathroom should not be less than 1.2 m.
  • Go to elevation view and change the height of floors to 12' as per NBC.
  • Select the walls and give the required thickness as per the NBC.
  • In the same way change the thickness of ceiling and floor as per NBC.
  • At last go to 3d view to check whether the entire project is perfect or not.

RESULT :

From the above steps and NBC values we can modify the normal plan into a correct plan which follows NBC rules and regulations.

QUESTION 8) We have identified requirements for modeling from question 7, Use these numbers from code book and verify the numbers used in modeling the unit from week 2 to week 4. If the numbers are not reasonable, use the numbers obtained from the code book to create a revision of the mode.

This model resembles the actual modeling requirements for Project 1 of course work

ANS 8)

From my previious designed plan I have changed and modified the building plan as per the rules of NBC.

As per the NBC we know that the height of the building should not exceed 1.5 times the width of the road. the height should not exceed 1.5 times the width of the road because if the height is more than that, the building in front will not recieve sunlight. Sunlight is necessary and mandatory to be entered into the house for better health conditions and natural sunlight kills germs and bacteria.

The width of the road in front of my residential building is 10 m, so the maximum height of my building should not exceed 1.5 x 10 = 15 m.

The height of my building is 25'-6", which when converted into meters is 25'-6"/3.281 = 7.62 m.

As the height of my building is 7.62m which is less than 15m , we do not have any problem regarding the height of the building.

FAR = Total area covered including all the floors / total plot area.

ground floor area = 104 m.sq.

first floor area = 110.6 m.sq.

total floor area = 104 + 110.6 m.sq = 214.6 m.sq.

total plot area = 170.3 m.sq.

FAR = 214.6 / 170.3 = 1.3, it comes under type 1,2,3

All the room sizes are as per NBC rules and regulations.
