Challenge

Week 5 Bending of iPhone

Objective: This challenge aims to perform the static structural analysis of the iPhone Bending under different conditions.

Case1: When Pushing Fingers are at one of the ends of the phone.

Case2: When Pushing Fingers are at Middle of the phone.

Geometry: The main components of the assembly are Fingers, Display, Inner Body, and Frame.

Geometry Consider for Case1:

Geometry Consider for Case2:

Import the geometry and translate the pushing fingers by X=22.5 mm and Z=10 mm

We have made all the fingers rigid except the Pushing Fingers ( Thumb).

Materials:

For Fingers- Structural Steel.

For Display- Glass.

For Frame- Aluminium Alloy.

For Insider- Polyethelene.

Properties of Materials are given below.

Aluminium Alloy NL:

Glass:

Polyethelene:

Structural Steel:

For Case 2, we have to define the S-N curve for Al alloy NL in order to find out the Fatigue Life.

Contacts:

The contact between frame and display is Bonded and all other contacts are Frictionless.

Bonded Contact:

Frictionless Contact:

Joints:

We have provided two Body-to Ground Translational joints to both Pushing Fingers.

We have provided Fixed Joints to all the remaining fingers.

Mesh:

We have deployed the default mesh on the component and apply the face sizing to the faces of pushing Fingers only.

Analysis Settings:

We are going to run this simulation in 8 steps. With the following settings.

Boundary Conditions:

Fixed Support: We are going to fix the Insider.

Displacement: We are providing the displacement to the Pushing Fingers.

Results:

Animation:

Case1:

a) Total Deformation:

b) Equivalent Stress in Frame:

c) Equivalent Strain in Frame:

Case2:

a) Total Deformation:

b) Equivalent Stress in Frame:

c) Equivalent Strain in Frame:

d) Life of the frame:

e) Safety Factor:

Conclusions:

Max. Total Deformation ( in mm) Max. Equivalent Stress (in MPa) Max. Equivalent Strain (mm/mm)
Case1 5.56 336.62 0.005
Case2 4.94 296.77 0.004

1) The stresses generated in the phone are reduced in case2 when the pushing fingers are in the middle of the phone.

2) In Case2, the life of the frame is shown which clearly indicates that most of the area of the frame is can withstand 1 e+8 cycles.

3) Deformation and strain in case2 also decreased.
