Challenge

Bending of iPhone

Aim:

To simulate the bending of iPhone model as per the given conditions in ANSYS-WORKBENCH.

Objective:

Case 1: Simulate the model without fatigue life.

Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

Procedure:

At first, we will be importing the geometry model into the workbench and check for any possible errors.

Now, we will be checking the connections for the case setup model. The first type of connections will be the contacts which will be many different surfaces in the case setup model. We will select all the contacts which is assumed by software. In these contacts we will providing frictionless contacts for the faces/surfaces as shown in the image below.

And we will be giving bonded contact connection for the display to frame as shown in the image below.

Now for the joint connections we will be giving fixed joints for ground to fingers and translational joints for ground to pushing finger as shown in the images below.

For better results we will be providing face sizing under mesh for refined mesh and accurate results of the solution parameters. The faces where face sizing will be given are shown in the two images below.

Now for the boundary conditions we will be given fixed support on the inside of the iPhone so that the iPhone doesn’t move away from its position as shown in the image below.

Now, we will be providing displacement motion along the Y axis for the to make it rigidly held by the iPhone and the other fingers as shown in the image below.

Finally, we will be providing joint displacement on the both pushing fingers separately for the required movement of the pushing fingers to check the bending of the iPhone and this joint displacement must have its reference co-ordinate system of X axis aligned to the general co-ordinate system of Y axis.

For Case 2 setup model we will be moving the bottom fingers to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm using SpaceClaim or Design Modeller and then following the other steps similar to that of Case 1 as shown in the images below.

Tabulation:

Cases

Directional Deformation (mm)

Case 1

7.9629

Case 2

7.9868

Comparison:

The Directional Deformation of Case 2 is slightly higher than Case 1 i.e., after changing the position of the pushing fingers.

For the Fatigue Tool – Life we can see that for Case 1 the failure after the number of loads occurs similar to that of Case 2. Since, the fingers are near to the corner of the frame in Case 1 we can see that it affects the life also on the side edges and the centre of the Frame. But for Case 2 we can see that it affects only at the centre of the Frame with a slightly larger area.

For the Fatigue Tool – Safety Factor we can see that for Case 1 the regions with less than 1 value of safety factor on the Frame doesn’t occur at the bottom edge as computed in the results. But for Case 2 the regions with less than 1 value of safety factor on the Frame doesn’t occur at a few regions on the bottom and top edge.
