Week 5 Bending of iPhone

AIM:

Perform Advanced Static Structural Analysis on Iphone bending operation using Ansys Workbench.

OBJECTIVE:

Iphone bending operation is done by appying displacement load throungh fingures and determine the directional deformation and fatigue life results i.e Life of the Frame and it,s factor of saftey.

Given Model:

*The given iphone model has three main parts.

1.Display

2.Frame.

3.Inside electonic parts.

PROCEDURE:

Assign the material as Glass for Display by, Selecting the Engineering data >> Edit >> Engineering data sources >> General Materials >> Polyethylene.

*Assign The material Polyethylene For Inside electronic parts of the iphone.

*Properties of the Polyethylene. is shown in below.

*Assign The material Glass For Display of the iphone.

*Properties of the Glass is shown in below.

*Assign The material Alluminium Alloy For Frame of the iphone.

*Properties of the Alluminium Alloy is shown in below.

*After Assigning the material close the engineering data and open new space claim to make the required designs.

*Once geometry is imported from the space claim then open the model and eidt the geometry in Mechanical moduler.

*Select the geometric bodies to make Stiffness behaviour is rigid.

*Assign the Contacts and targets according to the design model with contact type is Frictionless and bonded.

MESHING:

* Meshing is done with tetra elements on the iphone model with default size. The contact faces of frame and pushing fingure are meshed ith size of 4 mm.

Mesh statistics:

CASE-1:

RESULTS:

DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION (mm) :

MAX: 8 and MIN: -0.2962

LIFE OF ALLUMINIUM ALLOY ( FRAME ):

MAX: 1E8 and MIN: 0

FACTOR OF SAFETY ( FRAME ):

MAX: 10 and MIN: 0.18414

CASE-2

*Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. determine the fatigue life results for the same.

Geometry Before Transform:

Geometriy After Transform:

*After changing the position of the pushing fingures the displacement load is applied at near the centre of the iphone hence the stress distribution is uniform when compared to case-1.

DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION (mm) :

MAX: 7.755 and MIN: -0.21005

LIFE OF ALLUMINIUM ALLOY ( FRAME ):

MAX: 1E6 and MIN: 0

FACTOR OF SAFETY ( FRAME ):

MAX: 10 and MIN: 0.011145

COMPARING THE RESULTS:

SL.NO CASE DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION (MAX) DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION (MIN)

CONCLUSION:

* The Minimum Life of alluminium frame in both the cases is Zero. Therefore their is a chance that the design can fail at the firt cycle.

*Factor of Safety is below 1 in both the cases hence both the cases are failed under designing the iphone.

*Directional Deformation in case-2 is lessthan compared with case-1 because stress distribution is uniform in case-2.
