Week 4 Session 5
Objective: Explain the various applications of Power converters in an Electric vehicle. For Example what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V. Likewise come up with different applications
There are 3 Power converters that are used in the EV:
- AC to DC converter(Rectifiers): This is used where we plug in the vehicle and charge the battery. It rectifies the AC voltage and converts it to DC voltage.
- DC to DC: It has various applications in an EV. For the Auxiliary loads like, Dimmer, Air Conditioning, Head lights, Mobile charger, Music System, the power is not coming from traction battery we have to use auxiliary battery. These are also used to regulate the converted DC voltage into more or less like Traction motor might require more load than 230 V DC. Also used for HV battery and LV battery link. It is used to step up the volteage if the high voltage motor is connected as load to the low voltage battery. Also used for accumulating different energy sources to give a desired power output.
- DC to AC: When there is an AC motor used in the EV than to convert regulated DC to AC we use DC to AC converter. This will help to control the speed and will also regulate the frequency and voltage.
