Software: Ansys 2021 R1

Objective:

To simulate the rolling operation on a workpiece made of copper

To find out equivalent stress, equivalent plastic strain of the workpiece, directional deformation (in Z axis for the workpiece)

To prove that the workpiece has displaced by 90mm

Introduction:

Rolling is a metal forming process in which the workpiece or a metal stock is passed through one or more pairs of rolls. The main objective of rolling is to decrease the thickness of the metal in order to get a flatter part and know some properties of the material.

Procedure for setup:

Open ANSYS>>Drag and drop static structural model in the project schematic window.

Go to the engineering data to choose Copper Alloy NL material

Go to the model tab

Rename the different as required

Go to connection >> contacts

Flip the contact and set them as follows:

Make with them frictional contacts (friction coefficient=0.2)

Set the joints up

Go to tab for the meshing:

For the meshing of rhe workpiece choose the values as follows:

The following analysis settings are defined for the simulation.

Go to solution tab and insert equivalent stress, equivalent plastic strain, directional deformation (in Z axis for the workpiece)

Results

Equivalent stress

Proof of displacement of the workpiece

We can see that the deformtion along y axis of the end of the workpiece is -90.912mm. This is showing that the displacement of the end is 90.912 mm and justifying that the workpiece has displaced by 90mm.

Conclusion

Trough this simulation we learnt about deformation, equivalent stress and plastic strain occurred on copper workpiece used which are giving us some ideas about the strength of copper material.
