Week-4 Challenge WOT Condition Part-2

Week-4 Challenge WOT Condition Part

  1. What is the difference between the mapped and dynamic models of engine, motor, and generator? How can you change the model type?
  2. How does the model calculate miles per gallon? Which factors are considered to model fuel flow?
  3. Run the HEV ReferenceApplication with WOT drive cycle. Change the grade and wind velocity in the environment block. Comment on the results.
  4. Keeping all other parameters the same, compare the simulated results of hybrid and pure electric powertrains.

PS1. What is the difference between the mapped and dynamic models of engine, motor, and generator? How can you change the model type?

Solution:

Dynamic Model Mapped Model
1. It is the actual data set of the information of motor, engine, and generator or represents the actual components. 1. It is the data given in the lookup table of the motor, engine, and generator.
2. This model runs slower than the mapped model. 2. This model runs faster than the dynamic model.
3. Model decomposes the engine behavior into engine characteristics that are separated into lower-level components. By combining components in this way, the models capture the dynamic effects. 3. The tables provide overall engine characteristics, including actual torque, fuel flow rate, BSFC, and engine-out exhaust emissions.
4. This Model is used to analyze the impact of individual engine components on the overall performance. 4. This model is used for quasi-steady-state engine simulations.

How can you change the model type?

Solution:

Goto help section of MatLab and search for powertrain blockset and open the "Get started with powertrain blockset"

In that documentation open the hybrid electric vehicle multimode reference application and open the model.

after opening the model it will be like the below screenshot.

now, goto HevMnReferenceApplication >> Passenger Car >> Electric Plant >> Generator

Here you will find the two different blocks 1.GenMapped 2. GenDynamic

we want to use the Dynamic block, for that goto Modeling >> Variant Manager

one new window will pop up to screen, select the model you want to use, right-click on the option and "Set as Label Mode Active Choice"

PS2. How does the model calculate miles per gallon? Which factors are considered to model fuel flow?

Solution:

1 m^3 = 264.172 US Liquis gallon

1m = 0.00062132mile

Following factors are considered to model fuel flow:

1. Vehicle speed

2. Fuel Volume Flow

3. battery power

PS3. Run the HEV ReferenceApplication with WOT drive cycle. Change the grade and wind velocity in the environment block. Comment on the results.

Solution:

Open the Drive cycle block and select the drive cycle source as Wide-open throttle (WOT)

To change the grade and wind velocity, open the environment block and the following inputs.

Graph1:

Let's run the simulation in default condition:

with grade=0 & wind=0

Graph2:

Comments:

1. after applying the grade and wind speed: the target velocity is not able to reach up to trace velocity in 1st plot.

2. Battery SOC in graph1 is 70% and in default is more than 72%.

3.US Fule Economy MPGe in graph1 is less than 10MPGe but in default condition, it is 16MPGe.

PS4. Keeping all other parameters the same, compare the simulated results of hybrid and pure electric powertrains.

Solution:

Hybrid Powertrain:

Result:

Pure Electric Powertrain:

Result:

Comments:

Both are simulated in the Wide-open throttle (WOT) drive cycle. you can see the difference in SOC. US Fuel economy is good in Pure EV compared to Hybrid.

Battery ampere in Hybrid is more than Pure EV. In Hybrid max velocity is 70mph but in Pure EV that is 60mph. Hybrid is More powerful than Pure EV.
