Tooling Direction

Tooling direction is the direction along which the mold opens or along which the core and cavity are closed and pulled apart. It is a very important consideration as the molding machine opening and closing arrangement is made with respect to it, which enables the part to be ejected from the mold.

Parting Line

Parting line is the matching line which is formed between the mold and cavity when the mold closes. It is the border line from which the draft angle changes direction. It is nothing but the matching of core and cavity. It is also important to consider parting line as it will help to avoid undercuts.

Part Creation, Parting Line and Draft Analysis

  • First of all, I check the class A surface quality, and errors or irregularities. If any, repair them.
  • After that, create the tooling direction. Extract the front surface and taking a point on it. Take a line such that it is normal to the extracted surface and passes through the point.
  • Take Draft Analysis along this line and if needed adjust the compass to get a good positive draft within required angle value. This is the final tooling direction.
  • After that create class B surface by offsetting an extract/join of original class A surface. If ay irregularities, repair them to get a good class B surface.
  • Now create the class C surface using sweep and blend commands along the edge of the surfaces. Form the closed body and create the solid body from that.
  • Once that is done, again check draft for the solid body using Draft Analysis.
  • Now, extract the edge as shown below.

  • This is nothing but the Parting Line.
