Week 4 Challenge
WEEK - 4 ASSIGNMENT
- Creating clipped terrain model
Aim: To create a terrain model using ‘create clipped terrain model.’
Introduction:
A terrain model is a set of three-dimensional triangles mathematically computed from point data collected on the surface being modeled. Models are used to define highly irregular surfaces, particularly the surface of the earth, but can be generated for proposed surfaces, subsurface geotechnical layers, etcetera. Terrain models are also referred to as digital terrain models (DTMs), triangulated irregular networks (TINs), or triangulated surfaces.
There are different methods in ORD to create terrain methods.
The following are the methods:
- From File
- From Graphical filter
- From Elements
Additional methods:
- Create by text interpolation
- Create terrain model from Ascii file
- Create from point cloud
- Create clipped terrain moda
- Create complex terrain modal
- Create delta
- Create corridor alternate surfaces
- Create terrain models from design meshes
Procedure:
- Create a new seed 3d file with work space and work set as Training and Examples and Training Imperial.
- Go to ORD>Terrain>Additional methods> Create clipped terrain model.
- Click on Create clipped terrain model. It will pop up Create clipped terrain model tool.
- Before proceeding to this tool we have to add a reference terrain model. Click on the element section and add a reference file using ‘from file’ quickly. Choose the file ‘survey.dtm.’
- After adding ‘survey.dtm.’ file. Make sure that the Feature definition and triangulation are existing triangles and import terrain only.
- Then click on the import. Make sure that you tick the box on the left side of file survey.dtm. Otherwise, import can not be done.
- You can see on the left side of the box that ‘import’ completed. Close this Import terrain model window. Hit the ‘fit view’ tool.
- Rotate the terrain and make sure that there are only zero elevation points.
- Go to the bottom bar and right click. There you will find that ‘Running coordinates’ is not on. Click on it
- Now you can see the differe at the bottom that coordinates are functioning.
- In general while designing a roadway, river crossing or tunnel or railway or something will come across. There we need different terrain models. That's where this clipped one will be useful. We have already added the terrain file. We need to select a clipped model using drawing options (‘place smart line’). Go to the drawing and click on the ‘place smart line.’ Using that, draw a rectangular shaped polygon.
Go back to the ‘Create clipped terrain model’ option. It will ask you to click on the Reference terrain model and then clipped one. Click on them.
- It will ask you to click on the next one or reset. Hit right click. It will ask for horizontal and vertical offsets Make the feature definition as PBP (Proposed building pad) and clipping method as internal.
- Go to explorer and turn off triangles and all in both terrain models. Turn on minor contours for survey and triangles for PBP.
- Now let's do this with an external type.
- Follow the same procedure as the internal one but this time click on the external in clipped one.
Now we can see the terrain inside the clipped one exclusively.
Result: Created Clipped terrain model.
- Create Complex terrain model
Aim:
Introduction:
Procedure:
Create a new file and add a reference fille survey.dtm. Only on minor contours. Click on complex in additional methods.
Click on the create complex terrain model. Add survey one first. Remaining files we need to attach to the file and bring them to here and add.
We can make PBP to append or merge.
Select the feature Feature Definition as ‘Existing Thematic Height.’ Give a suitable name. Then, click finish.
Turn off the triangles in both.
- Edit the terrain model
Aim: To edit the terrain model.
Introduction:
ORD provided many ways to edit the terrain features. The tools used in editing the model
Procedure:
Create a new seed 3d file with workspace as training and examples and work set as training imperial. Attach the TIN file using ‘from file’ terrain model creation.
Go to ORD>terrain>Edit Model.
First tool is about deleting the vertex. When we move the cursor on the model the nearest vertex will show up.
After clicking on delete vertex. Select the terrain model. Move the cursor towards the vertex. Click on the cross mark and delete whichever vertex you want.
- Deleting the edge triangle
- Swap line
- Insert vertex
- Move vertex
Click on the move vertex option and move the cursor towards any vertex and click on the vertex and move.
- Delete triangle by line
- Delete Feature
No added features in file. If any added features are there, select them and delete them.
Result: All the editing options are discussed with images.
- Annotate the contours with labels
Aim: To annotate the contours with labels
Procedure:
Go to ORD> Terrain>Label terrain contours
Fill the text alignment and dimension style as per your requirement. Click on ‘A’ button.
Front line option if we choose annotation will be like
Up slope type
Double click on the number. It will pop up in the ‘Text editor window’. We can add the text too. Annotation labels are used to represent the contour lines.
Result: Annotaion with lables for conoturs is done.
- Change the contour interval.
Aim: To change contour interval for terrain model
Procedure: Select terrain model. Go to the properties window Click on the terrain. Go to contours. There we will find the contour interval.
Change the contour interval . Major or minor bothe options will be there. I changed the major contour interval from 5’ to 10’.
Result: Changed the contour interval from 5’ to 10’.
