Week 1 Challenge
1).Create a DSR for the following items for any highway you are aware of in your region. Mention the highway name and location.
Highway name: NH 65,Vijayawada-Hyderabad expressway.
Location : Kanchikacherla
a.Category/class of the road: National Highway
b.Design speed :80-100 KMPH
- Terrain: majorly plain and partly terrain along NH 65
d.Travel lane width: 54.8m
e.Typical minimum cross slope: 2%
f.Horizontal curve radius without superelevation: 525m (400 m is min desirable)
2.)What is the typical roadway project life cycle workflow? List out in points. What is the typical roadway design workflow? Also, list out all the experts needed on a roadway project.
It involves all aspects in roadway construction from summary report to plan set.
The following are the parameters include in roadway project workflow:
- Design summary report
- Topographical survey
- Typical sections
- Geometric design
- Horizontal
- Vertical
- Super elevation design
- Plan set
Roadway design workflow involves all elements designs in the roadway section. Like, geometric design, super elevation, sight distance and other features.
Experts needed on a roadway project:
- Surveyors
- Roadway designers
- Drainage designers
- Bridge/structures designers
- Traffic designer
- Utilities Designer
3.)What are the important geometrical parameters of a horizontal alignment and vertical profile? When is a vertical curve needed? List the formula with a diagram for the vertical curve. List all types of vertical curves with the diagrams.
Important geometrical parameters of a horizontal and vertical alignment:
Horizontal:
- Design speed
- Superelevation
- Radius of horizontal curve
- Extra widening
- Length of transition curve
- Set-back distance
- Shift of horizontal curve
- Curve resistance
Vertical alignment:
- Gradient
- Grade compensation
- Design (length) of summit & valley curves
Necessity of vertical curve:
In order to have smooth vehicle movements on the roads, the changes in the gradient should be smoothened out by the vertical curve.

Types of vertical curves:

4.) When is superelevation necessary? Show diagrammatic presentation of super concept.
To counteract the effect of centrifugal force and to reduce the tendency of the vehicle to overturn or skid, the outer edge of the pavement is raised with respect to the inner edge, thus providing a transverse slope through the length of the horizontal curve. The transverse slope given to the pavement surface is known as the superelevation.
5.) List out the typical set of submissions needed for a roadway project?
- Preparation of outline or feasibility plan of the project.
- Preparation of the detailed plan of the project.
- Preparation of estimates of the project.
- Preparation of tender documents of the project.
6.Draw a typical cross section with following parameters in ORD –
- 12’ travel lane
- 10’ shoulder lane
- 2% cross slope
- 2’ berm
- End conditions with cut/fill of 6:1 and 4:1
- Ditch condition of front slope 4:1, back slope 4:1, 3:1
Diagram was attached. Allthe remaining diagrams unable uplod here because of network issues. I kept all of them in attachement
