Week-4 : Basic Calibration of Single cylinder CI-Engine
Aim/Introduction -
1. Compare SI vs CI .
2. Analysis of important parameters and its impact on performance.
Task 1 -
Particulars SI CI
Operating cycle It operates on otto cycle It operates on diesel cycle
Fuel used Petrol is used as fuel. Diesel is used as fuel.
Thermal efficiency less thermal efficiency. high thermal efficiency.
Intake Air + fuel. Only air.
Noise less noisy more noisy
Compression ratio Low compression ratio. High compression ratio
Maintenance cost Less More
Weight of engine Less More
Cylinder pressure less More
Task 2 -
1.BSFC - It is rate of fuel consumption to produce to 1 kw brake power in 1hr. It show the fuel oil cons. to get desired output.
2.A/F Ratio - It plays main role in consumption.Rich or lean mixture decides our combuction process. In SI A/F is limited to 14.5 to avoid detonation. In CI A/F normally is near by 19.
3.Exhaust Temperature - Exhaust temprature of cylinder depends on its combustion process, Fuel injection, V/v timmings etc.
Task 3 -
1.Case setup setting @ 3600 rpm shown in figure 1
2. steady state is achieved in 5 periods.
Figure 1-

Power , Torque and other parameters are listed below.

Remarks / conclusion
It has been observed that
1. With MFB 50 the torque and bhp is reduced.
2. with MFB 50 th bsfc is also increased.
