Week 3 Session 7
Some of the commonly used motors for EV are: BLDC, PMSM and IM.
| CATEGORY | BLDC | PMSM | INDUCTION MOTOR |
| Construction | stator windings and permanent magnes for rotor, electronic commutation | 3 phase stator windings, permanent magnets for rotor | 3 phase stator windings, rotor has conductor bars |
| type | DC motor | AC synchronous motor | AC asynchronous motor |
| working priciple | placing a current carrying conductor in a stationary magnetic feild, exerts a force on the conductor. | Interaction of rotating magnetic feild with a stationary magnectic field exerts torque on the rotor | current induced in the rotor due to the rotating magnetic feild yeilds torque to move the rotor. |
| self starting | Yes | No | Yes |
| speed control | control at commutation circuits | by variable frequency supply | varying the frequency or poles. |
| Overall efficiency | high | good | high |
| Maintanence | low | high | low |
| Service life | better | good | best |
| performance | can withstand sudden load changes and suitable for high performance | cannot keep up with sudden load changes. | can withstand Rugged environmental conditions |
