Week 4 Session 5

In an Electric Vehicle, three types of converters are used.

1) AC-DC convertors: mostly used with the onboard chargers.

2)DC-AC convertors: mostly used with Motor circuits that consists of AC motor, where both magnitude and frequency of the AC voltage is controlled for drive action.

3)DC-DC convertors: there are isolated convertors like flyback, halfbridge, full-bridge convertors and non isolated convertors like buck, boost and buck-boost convertors.

  • The servo motors used in Vehicles operate at very low voltages, also Horn as mentioned above- buck converters.
  • Headlights,Tail lights, indicators all utilise electric power but also at very low level- buck convertors.
  • wipers, the infotainment system, dashboard panel all require voltage at different levels but lower than the battery pack voltage- buck converters.
  • in case of hybrid vehicle, that uses ICE will require a starter motor, that will require power but at a different level.
  • The automatic window opening and closing system, requires power but very low level.
