Week 2 Session 7
The architechture of HEV can be can be categoriesd into 3 , namely: Series, Parallel, Series-Parallel.
| MODES | SERIES ARCHITECHTURE | PARALLEL ARCHITECHTURE |
| Engine | In this mode, motor takes power only from generator, which is inturn powered by ICE | In this mode, motor takes power from the IC engine directly, eliminating the need for Generator. |
| Battery | motor takes power through Battery. here, sometimes ICE powers generator that powers the battery. | motor takes power from battery, operates complety in battery mode. |
| hybrid | whenever high torque is required this mode is activated where both power is taken from bboth battery and IC engine. | as per torque requirement or fuel/State of charge, both battery and IC engine used to power the vehicle |
| regenerative | power flows from motor to battery | power flows from motor to battery |
| advantage | only motor is connected to transmission, so no need for multi ratio gear box. | higher energy efficiency, since one stage conversions take place. |
| disadvantage | ICE--->Generator---->motor. this leads to duoble energy conversion happening. hence reduced energy efficiency. | since both motor and ICE is connected to transmission, gear box assembly is required. |
| application | heavy vehicles | commercial passenger vehicles. |
SERIES-PARALLEL ARCHITECHTURE:
In this mode,
- a series path connects engine to wheel
- a parallel path connects the battery to the wheel.
- this mode has the element called 'Power Split' that automatically decides the mode the vehicle can operate on based on the fuel level in the fuel tank and the state of charge of the battery at the given time.
