Week 3 Session 7

Question 1:

Compare the different motors used in EV and list down the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Answer

Motors used in EVs:

In evs the motor is heart the vehicle when it is compared to fuel engine where the engine is the heart of the mechanical vehicle. These motors are of some types and they are employed to the certain parameters criterion. These are the motors which are employed in Electrical vehicles based on discussed application and criterion.

PMDC – permanent magnet DC motor(PMDC) used in variable speed drives

Advantages of PMDC:

* As the PMDC motor uses permanent magnets It doesnot requires field windings

* PMDC motors have higher efficiency as compared to conventional DC motors

Disadvantages of PMDC:

* Due to large currents and excessive heat generated, there is a possiblity of poles to de-magnetizied.

* Cannot able to control the stator windings becuase the stator are replaced by permanent magnets.

BLDC – Brushless DC motor(BLDC) consumes less power and used in Fans, EVs

Advantages of BLDC:

Low power consumption as compared to conventional DC motors

Good variable speed and torque range of the BLDC motors.

Recommended for best speed control and high torque.

Disadvantages of BLDC:

The cost of a brushless DC motor is comparatively higher as compared to a brushed DC motor

The wiring of the motor can be complex comparatively.

Induction motor - Induction motors runs on AC power and perform at higher efficiency

Advantages of Induction motor:

It has rugged construction which is more advantageous factor of it.

The induction motors have good self-starting torque factor

Disadvantages of Induction motor:

The induction motors has high inrush currents

The induction motors are meant to start with stators which are additional equipment to be used.

Causes crawling and cogging at higher speeds

Dc motors – DC motors are the motors which can run on DC supply and can give higher performance.

Advantages of DC motor:

The DC motor are avaliable in different opereated voltage ratings

Control method of DC motors makes the adaptable and easy to

Disadvantages of DC motor:

High cost for the drivers and speed control of DC motors.

Requires High maintenance
