Challenge

Week - 3 Drop test Challenge

Aim:

The aim of the challenge is to run a rop test simulation for a phone hitting a rigid floor. The meshed parts were given and the aim was to apply all the necessary boundary conditions, loading and control conditions to finally run the simulation.

Explanation:

The conditions of the setup for the simulation are as below:

Unit System used: Kg-mm-ms

Parts:

2 parts: Phone and Floor

1. Phone: Part ID:2 Section: Solid Element Formulation:1 Material: MAT_001 Elastic (values for steel are taken)

2. Floor: Part ID:1 Section: Shell Element Formulation:2 Material: MAT_020 Rigid (Values for concrete are taken from the internet)

Bounary conditions

Floor: Rigidly fixed in all degrees of freedom; specified in the Material section itself.

Phone: Prescribed_motion_set. Create a noe set of all nodes in the Phone and gave the velocity of 20mm/ms in negative z-direction.

The velocity was specified by the a load curve using Define Curve option.

Control conditions:

Contact: Initial penetration check was given.

Hourglass: Check for hourglass was given due to presence of shell elements in the floor.

Termination: End time was 3 ms.

Database:

ASCII ouput files were requested for GLSTAT, MATSUM and RCFORC.

Binary D3 plot was requested for output animation.

The plots for von mises stress and effective plastic strain have been provided below:

The simulation ran smoothly and there was normal termination.

Conclusion:

The simulation ran and terminated normally. The d3 plot showed the animation correctly. As for the output values, although the fringe shows zero stress and strain, the correct values can be found by adjusting the range of the values on the fringe. Finally, the simulation was a good learning experience about the use of LS-PrePost and LS-Run.
