Week 3 Challenge : CFD meshing on Turbocharger
CFD Meshing on Turbocharge
Aim:
To create a surface mesh and volumetric mesh on a given turbocharger using ANSA.
Objective:-
To perform a topology clean-up and create a surface and volumetric mesh for the turbocharger with the target length of
- Blade Stage 1 - 1 mm
- Blade Stage 2 - 1 mm
- Impeller - 2 mm
- Shaft Rotor - 1 mm
- Turbo Casing - 5 mm
- Compressor Casing - 5 mm
- Inlet Casing Cover - 5 mm
Procedure:-
1) Importing the given CAD Model of the turbocharger.

2) Topology Cleanup
- A given geometry has been prepared by removing single cons, triple cons, and missing surfaces of the turbocharger.

3) Creating PID of a Turbocharger
- Property ID has been created for the turbocharger components.

4) Surface Meshing
- Meshing the turbocharger with the given mesh length using the spot mesh.
- Define the length of perimeters and macros.
- Change the quality criteria and mesh parameters to min and max mesh length type as tria elements.
- Generate the surface mesh using the spot mesh by selecting the region.

5) Volume Meshing
- Define volume using the whole db option in the volume mesh deck for auto-detect volumes after creating a surface mesh.
- Keep the fluid volume of the turbocharger and delete the geometry that has a thickness or parent geometry.
- Change the mesh type to Tetra CFD and remesh the volume.

Learning Outcomes:-
- Isolating the surface using Or, And, Not, !Not, Invert, and neighbour options.
- Creating hot points using Insert, Project, Multi-Project, and Parametrical.
- Creating a new surface using existing surface, COONS, Fitted, and Fill Hole options.
- Remove the smaller edge using the surface cut option.
- Set new PID for the turbocharger components in the property manager tool.
- Extracting the fluid volume of the turbocharger.
Result:-
The surface mesh and volumetric mesh have been created for the given mesh length parameters of the turbocharger.
- Surface mesh - 802394 (trias)
- Volume mesh - 6824969 (tetras)
