Week 3 Challenge : CFD meshing on Turbocharger
Aim:
To perform volumetric mesh of the given turbocharger model and to assign PID's required and to discuss the learning outcomes
Process:
for every model we must follow the following steps in order as
- TOPO clean up
- surface mesh
- volumetric mesh
1.TOPO cleanup
- initially import the given model into ANSA interface
- now we can go checks>>geomentry to find out no of single and triple cons present
- then we can create faces by topo>>>faces>>new to create faces or to fill holes in geomentry
- then again we can check for errrors
- make sure there is no single cons present and if there is any unneccessary triple cons we can get rid it of by topo>>cons>>release and then topo>>faces>>topo to convert triple cons to double cons
- also in order to volumetric mesh we need to close each and every openend surface we need to create face slike inlet, outlet etc
- after topo cleanup component will be as shown

2.Surface Mesh
- in order to perform surface mesh we must assign PID, so click on property list and rename pid's
- if there is any unwanted pid's which is not there we can delete it by suppressing it
- list will be as below

- then select components such as compressor casing ,turbo casing and its inlet and outlet and click show only
- we need to mesh the above componenets with 5mm target length
- for this mesh parameters will be 5mm target length and type will be tria
- in quality criteria min and max length should be 3 and 7 mm
- provide length as 5mm then spot mesh it
- similiarly carry out meshing other components by given target lengths respectively
- after this you can observe there is no mesh in the surfaces where two components with different mesh lengths combine, we need to get rid of it too
- select the unmeshed surfaces select mesh parameters and quality criteria as required.
- only thing varies is dont specify the length parameters as fixed be it in a range between two target lengths
- then perform mesh then it will mesh correctly
- click on macros >> cut to fine mesh the surface with varying target length
3.Volumeteric Mesh
- to perform volumetric we need to make sure there is no unmeshed surfaces in components
- then click on volume mesh>>define to find out no of volumes available
- then we can neglect volumes which fluid will not flow or it can have metal thickness which will be the obtruction for fluid flow
- the list of volumes need to mesh is as follows

- then click on each volume and click on remesh tetra cfd and click on ok
- following this we can mesh all the volumes

- if we remove elements randamly it will be as follows

- we can obseve that the mesh elements are is shape of pyramid
- if we anlayse in shaft rotor area we can observe there is variation in sizes of each and every mesh

Result:
Thus volumetric mesh of the given turbo charger model is done and process is discussed
