Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Sol: For this case the EV_defaullts_in file was chosen and only the cargo mass was changed to 500 kgs and remaining parameters were kept as they were. The vehicle uses the ESS_PB25 Lead-Acid type battery.

In the next window, the CYC_UDDS drive cycle was selected. The vehicle was simulated for 1 cycle and the results obtained were as follows:

Charge consumed and the distance travelled were as follows:

The results show that after a single cycle the SOC of the battery is around 70% and the distance travelled is 12 km.

Now the number of cycle of the drive cycle were increased to 5 and below were the observations:

We can observe here that the battery runs out of charge even before the drive cycle is finished and the vehicle travels 41.5 km.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Sol: In the above model, the energy storage parameter was changed to "ESS_PB5_FocusEV" and the remaining parameters were kept the same. The cargo mass considered was again 500 kg.

The following were the results obtained:

We can observe here that the SOC remains around 40% even after the completion of 5 drive cycles and also the distance covered by the vehicle is increased to 60 km.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

Sol: The gradeability test check box was enabled in 2nd dialog box (or step 2). Here the angle was kept constant and the speed of the vehicle is varied to test the variation of gradeability with speed. 'Grade Options' button was used to configure the model. The results were as follows:

Table comparing speed v/s gradeability:

Speed (mph) Speed (kmph) Gradeability (%) at 6 deg
30 48 2.5
35 56 2.4
40 64 2.5
45 72 2.2
50 80 2
55 88 1.7
60 96 1.5

From the above table we can conclude that the gradeability decreased with increasing speeds and is maximum for speed range between 30 - 40 mph for 6 deg for the given model.
